Open Source and Values
by Jim Herrmann 20 Jan '05

I've been reading George Lakoff, and doing a lot of thinking about values, lately. My own values as well as those of others. I know what it is about open source software that appeals to my values. You can look at the list in my sig and get an idea of the values I'm talking about, and you can imagine how OSS fits into them, but I don't want to bias the discussion too much beforehand with my opinions. I will offer those up later. What I would like to know from some of you guys is, which of your values are best served by OSS? Please let me know either directly in confidence, or publicly to the list, where you consider yourself on the conservative/moderate/progressive political spectrum, and what it is about OSS that appeals to you. I'm especially anxious to hear from my LUG friends on the right of the spectrum, as that is more difficult for me to understand. Once I've heard several opinions, I plan to formulate some kind of summary explanation, or theory, that connects different values and the open source movement. Thanks for your input, Jim Herrmann -- Progressive Values ARE American Values Responsibility, Empathy, Freedom, Opportunity, Prosperity, Fairness, Trust, Honesty, Open Communication, Community, Cooperation

Both now bookmarked in Firefox, which is where I have decided to manage this stuff for the time being. BTW, while fiddling around in the Firefox bookmarks, I found the link to RealPlayer movie trailers. The RP site is more generous with bandwidth than the Apple QuickTime trailer site. Much better viewing with RealPlayer 10 in Linux than on the XP side with QuickTime. Peace, Rick

You win, i think. Drat, drat and double drat! If I'd only kept that SW receiver I built in 1972, or the transmitter my brother built in the 60s complete with vacuum tubes. So anyone ever use any of the HAM radio options in the kernel? And what's up with that anyway? What use is HAM radio to a computer? Computer generated Morse code? Like there's any living mortal that could translate that! Now using a Linux computer to track a model rocket's statistics, that would be useful! I need to get out and do some model rocketry. Any local places to shoot off some really *BIG* suckers? I know they've got something out Kansas way, but can't remember where. But something up NorthEast here would be nice. Want to get my grandkids involved (ugh, grandfather at 34!). > -----Original Message----- > From: Oren Beck > > ... I've seen some of the big boys fitted with cameras, sensors and transmitters. But here's another idea that I'd like to implement perhaps alternatively to fitting rockets with sensors. A ground tracking system hooked up to a Linux box, to follow the rocket and determine altitude and velocity. The benefit here of course is build it once and not have to worry about it getting destroyed because a shut fails to open. Of course the upside of putting sensors on at least one rocket is implementing a tracking device capable of withstanding the kinds of force subjected to in rockets. Only one flaw in your homegrown cruise missile. The topo maps give the height of natural features only. All those man-made obstacles might prove to be a flight hazard. ;') > -----Original Message----- > From: David Nicol > > On Wed, 19 Jan 2005 13:30:27 -0600, Brian Densmore > <DensmoreB(a)ctbsonline.com> wrote: > > But what about little sensors in the rocket, to track speed > and altitude > > and transmit to a land-based Linux server, running a graphical > > plot of the rocket? He he he ... William Jewell had a working z80 with a teletype that we had to write a program for in a lab I took there back in the early 90s. They used to have a little museum with an Altair, a CP/M and I think an IMSAI too. Don't know if it's still there. Those old things are worth money now... to collectors. Maybe I should slap mine back together and put it up for sale on EBay. > -----Original Message----- > From: Leonard, Phil > > ... As for the contest in ancient tech- I may be a placeholder by there possibly being an asr-33 in the bowels of my storage barn unless it got thieved by former staff ! That asr had been used as a paper tape drive for a swtp 6800 my classmate inherited in 1982. Dang. I used to have an asr-19, which is a model 15 with a model 14 paper tape reader/punch. I gave it to a guy that had a collection of Teletype equipment several years ago. As I remember it still had an old tape in the supply spool that had a date stamp of 1956. I used to have this connected to an old Z80 CP/M box (Digital Group if anyone remember them) for a printer. Nothing like switching a 120V DC current-loop from one pin of a parallel port to drive the monster (darlington pair). Yee Haw, those were the days, writing the "driver" in Z80 assembly directly into the BIOS. I still have the computer but the Teletype is long gone. Philip

AX.25 is an extension to X.25 to allow the addition of a call sign field (gotta keep the FCC happy). Philip

They really flubbed that free bit of advertising. "How about Global Thermonuclear War?" Or we could just play Tic-Tac-Toe. Anyone know where to buy a remote controlled Pterodactyl? Captain Crunch whistle? You'll notice they replaced the Captain Crunch whistle in the movie with a stupid piece of metal to "short" the receiver. BTW, I understand they still work, but don't try it. You'll find yourself talking to an operator very quickly. Ah, memories. Brian "old-timer" Densmore
