Router Problem
by Jim Herrmann 04 Feb '09

04 Feb '09

Well, now back to my original problem. I have two run of the mill routers. I have a LinkSys WRT54G router/WAP that is connected to the cable modem. My shop building is too far away (120+ft) from the Linksys to make an effective wireless connection out here, but I have ethernet running from the Linksys to the shop building. I have an old Netgear WGR614 router/WAP that I can stick on the end of the ethernet cable, and I can establish a network connection, I can get to the internet, etc. That's all cool. The problem I have is that I can't get to our shared drive (Buffalo Link Station NAS), which uses SMB, that has the bulk of our music on it. I could live without it, but it would be nice to have, and still be wireless. So, how do I configure the Netgear to "pass thru" the SMB traffic. I guess I want to set The Netgear up as a bridge, but donot see any way to do that. Any thoughts on that one? Thanks, Jim -- - That One - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCUOHKznUyI

Restating the case for keeping "User Data" on a physically separate drive or drives
by Oren Beck 03 Feb '09

03 Feb '09

I have been gently suggesting a new practice. Making it routine to keep the Non-OS data on a separate drive from the OS. Bluntly stating the two bedrock facts seems belaboring the obvious. But the percent of such default installs is trivial at best. So? I invite constructive comment on why or why NOT using a separate device for OS and user data makes any sense. The two bedrock facts being? 1: that any disaster befalling the OS device's file system has "less chance" of damaging user data. 2: Establishing that user data as detached from the OS assists many things. The list of those "many things" is non-trivial and more. Let me give the short closers *IF* we establish it as default practice that future Linux installs use a two device minimal mode we banish whole categories of data disasters. That alone is good enough for me. The icing on that being swapping an OS becomes closer to a trivial "no user data risked" operation. Addendum forced by premeditated desire to stifle the YahBut gallery is the cherry on top. In a long past time a "drive" was a truly major expense. Even removable media such as floppy etc were cost issues. Today ? I humbly offer the KCLUG thread on Craig's issues RE: Rolling back updates. as "Exhibit A" -- Oren Beck 816.729.3645

Re Undoing an update
by Craig Aldinger 31 Jan '09

31 Jan '09

I have recently built up a new computer and loaded it with a Canonical disc of Ubuntu 8.10, so far, so good. I like the OS and the upgrade from 7.10 was worth it. Until this morning.... I got the lit icon, checked the list of updates, shut down all other open programs and started the process. Downloaded 23 or 26 updates, among them a new linux kernel and its associated stuff, download proceeded smoothly and, at the end, required a system restart. I did so and that's when my troubles began. The list of weirdness is long and convoluted so let's just say it essentially crippled my computer. After some roundabout troubleshooting with Oren, I got it to run (sort of). What I want to know: is there a way I can undo/delete that specific update (all 20some of them) and restore my OS to where it was and, if so, how? Command line stuff is still a bit intimidating for me but I am always interested in learning so if the answer goes that direction, I'll learn! Thanks, Craig -- "When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro..." Raoul Duke

This was it. From here I found the reset instructions, and figured out that I wasn't holding down the reset button long enough. Duh! I'm working now. Thanks everyone! I have a Netgear router that I was trying to change into a pass through router, and I turned off the DHCP allocation. Now I can't get to the router at all. Any thoughts on what I can try? Thanks, Jim -- - That One - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCUOHKznUyI

UUIDs missing in Ubuntu?
by Sean Crago 11 Jan '09

11 Jan '09

I recently did a benign looking apt-get dist-upgrade in Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex and, a few days later, rebooted. I think a kernel patch was involved, but I'm not sure/haven't tried to revert to an old one yet to fix this problem, but I'd like to find a cleaner fix: I have one old PATA HDD on my box that I mount on boot to /tmp via a UUID-based fstab entry. This used to work just fine. It's mounted a generic SCSI device, so it doesn't show up as hda1 anymore, but it shows up as sda1 and is symlinked to in /dev/disk/*/, as are my other generic SCSI devices - My removable media, my memory card reader, etc. Now, though, I don't see anything except my one SATA drive in my /dev/disk/by-*/ entries. To make things substantially MORE strange, all of these problems went away at 13:37 this afternoon, when the missing symlinks were created en masse. No reference at all exists to that time in any plaintext file in /var/log/ Any guesses as to what's wrong with my system and how to prevent this from blocking a proper UUID-based fstab from working at boot time? Thanks, Sean Crago Kathmandu
