Joe, I don't know where UPS mis-dropped it, but there was an empty space slot in the computer. I noticed that there was no DVD-ROM Drive. Did you ship it with one? Lawrence Freenet

Lawrence Freenet is going city-wide on March 1st. http://www.lawrencefreenet.org/ They use wireless networking to cover Lawrence in Internet service, though you can currently only attach to the service through a wireless-to-wired conversion box. They have plans for free WiFi in Downtown Lawrence. Home service costs between $20 and $35 a month, installation is $200 to $0 (depending on length of contract), though low-income families meeting their income guidelines can receive free Internet service with free installation. Part of the program involves handing out a free computer to low-income families, often the same ones who are receiving the free Internet service. I'm suspicious from the costs charged to paying Internet subscribers (as well as the installation fees and contract lengths) that someone has gone all-Windows in the choice of operating system. The free computers are all donated legacy systems, put together by volunteers. Software choices (in addition to bureaucratic costs) could be a major factor in increasing the Lawrence Freenet's costs in their free computer program. From links on the Lawrence Freenet website, their choices appear to be Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office. Since the major backer is UNI Computers (http://www.unicomputers.com/) and they make their money off services to Windows users, I'm thinking that the money-saving benefits of Linux aren't being used. Since the broadband connection is a wireless-to-wired conversion box, there will be no issues with Linux wireless NICs as the only connection required is a wired NIC. Develop the system appropriately and most home users won't notice the difference, though to make things easier donating a CUPS compatible printer as well would be appropriate. If you go the next block over, there is a monthly pay lot between bldgs, but you can park there for free at night and there is an alleyway that leads to the street that the Library is on. It is well lit and safe. When we had to meet at different locations after the old Power & Light Bldg. and when the Old library closed, there was a lot of confusion about the meetings and the details. Everything seemed up in the air till the last minute. Talk about a way to break up a group. People have a hard time following the details on the kclug.org website as it is. BUT, we could announce a meetup type extra meeting. If someone wants to host it, have DEFINITE plans, time, place, directions, room reservation with power, tables, Ethernet, whatever you need to have. Get it squared away and post a message to the list and to IRC announcing it and just do it. If you build it, they will come. If it is more convenient to some that can't make a reg. meeting, they will come. I have only been to one meeting but my company is moving to a permanent location at Cambridge Circle sometime around the first of the year. Plenty of parking. No stairs. Conference room with network connections. I could talk to my boss about possibly hosting the meetings there. Phillip C. I'm obviously not affected by directly by the discussions about where to meet, but, as an outsider that relies on the mailing list and Freenode, I'd hate to see anything break up the LUG outside of the physical meetings. That said, the notion of announcing small meetings on Meetup.com and of rotating KCLUG meeting locations seems more sensible than creating daughter LUGs, given the size of the current LUG and the relatively short distance from one end of the KC metro to the other (compared with Chicago, Houston, LA, DC, NYC, and the like - Even the drive from Liberty to Overland Park is only ~30 miles, according to Google). -Sean Crago/MrZaius

KCLUG subdivisions

Because I have decided not to attend KCLUG meetings due to the impracticality of locating the library (let alone parking near it), and because others in #kclug expressed some interest, I propose we consider splitting KCLUG into subdivisions. KCLUG as a whole would continue to share a single set of mailing lists, IRC channels, etc, but meetings and real-world events may be divided into regions. A few guys seemed interested in an Overland Park subdivision/region (which would meet in O.P.)-- anyone interested in also starting a Northland subdivision?

FS: DEC OVMS keyboard LK450-AA

I have a DEC OVMS keyboard for sale or trade. This is used with a PC and a (good) term program to connect to DEC/Compaq/HP VMS systems. If you run the right software it will use all the correct mapping for the many special keys on the board, and I've found some people have created X key modmaps for Linux for these.
