Upgrading from FC4 to Kubuntu???

Since Fedora Legacy Project has gone belly up, I've been rethinking what to do with the workstation my daughter (a high school senior soon to be college student) uses. It currently has FC4 installed. I'd like to move her to Ubuntu (specifically kubuntu because she likes KDE) but I'm not sure if I can "ugprade" to it from FC4. I'm going to backup all of her files and photos to a CD or DVD, but I'm afraid I'm going to miss something (and I'd rather not back up the entire hard drive if I don't have to since the OS or distro won't matter any longer). Has anyone ever done this? Upgrade from one distro to another? Or do I have to just wipe the hard drive and start from scracth (like I would if it had Windows XP installed)? Happy New Year! OT: ERP survey

I'm posting it here because I think that research papers on Open Source development are an integral part of the long-term credibility which comes to us. If you have any experience with Open Source ERP, and would like to participate in the survey, please do. Also, the BrotherJonathan project will be released on SourceForge in its first complete, working form, in about a week. imaginary(?) window manager feature

So I have been experimenting with alternatives to lwm, which is pleasantly out-of-the-way and allows me to run KDE kicker for a "task bar" What I want is a wm with a particular twist on a tiling feature : a way to dock windows to each other so that the bar between them can be moved back and forth, resizing both (or all) of the so-connected frames. Is anyone aware of a wm that can do that? There are "docking" features in various wm's task-bar kind of things, which this idea is pretty close to; it would allow arbitrary windows to dock with each other, (and also undock of course); so I could for instance dock all my xload windows to each other and have a "raft" of xloads that would raise/lower, cycle, etc as a unit. I had this idea after experimenting with ratpoison again yesterday. Ratpoison allows splitting windows in half either horiz of vert but does not support (at least not without reading the whole instructions) splitting windows somewhere other than half, or mousing the dividing line up/down or left/right. thoughts? happy new year

Free Monitors

I have an opportunity to get some free monitors. They are supposed to be 17", and they are all supposed to work. I'm not sure how many there are, but I was wondering how many of you would be interested in getting one of these. I'm going to check them out tomorrow, er, later today, and I will get back with details, but just to gage an initial interest, I thought I would mention these. I plan to be at the meeting tomorrow night and I hope to bring one in to look at it. Let me know. Peace, Jim

Anyone know of a blacklisting service -- like an RBL -- that lists IPs that produce junk in comment forms? I maintain a comment form service (TJGFH) and I've been getting a lot of it. -- He thought he could organize freedom how naive and controlling of him

Linux Printing

I just wanted to mention that MicroCenter in Overland Park at around 91st & Metcalf has HP Deskjet D2360's for $49.99. The latest HPLIP and HPJIS both support this printer perfectly, and I'm an anecdote to this being true. I'm running Debian "Etch" 3.1_r4 and the HP Deskjet D2360 prints like a dream come true. ALSA Setup

I took the Tascam USB card I had that Kubuntu wouldn't recognize as a sound card, and I got a Roland Edirol UA-25, which is supported out of the box. When I plug it in, it seems to be recognized as a sound card: root@jim-laptop:~# cat /proc/asound/cards 0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel HDA Intel at 0xd8240000 irq 58 1 [UA25 ]: USB-Audio - EDIROL UA-25 Roland EDIROL UA-25 at usb-0000:00:1d.1-1, full speed However, I can't see it in Kmix, Alsamixergui, Jack, or any other higher level sound application. Does anyone have any suggestions of what I need to look at to get this working? Of course, I tried it in Windows today, and it just works. Doh! Help! Thanks, Jim

WTB: DDR RAM and a Socket 478 mobo

1. I'm the "in family" computer tech for my father-in-law's business. They are needing to upgrade the RAM in a Dell PowerEdge 400SC. For that I'm looking for a matched pair of DDR400 PC3200 128MB DIMMs. The system already has a pair of 128s in two slots, and I'm looking to fill the remaining slots cheaply and bring it up to 512MB RAM. Running XP SP2 and a virus scanner causes so much VM swapping that they can't get any work done when it runs, even on it's HT P4. 2. For myself I'm in need of a Socket 478 motherboard, as I'm in the process of building up my first P4 level Linux workstation. I've got two chips that need homes, a 1.8GHz Celeron and a 2.8GHz HT P4. I'd prefer to get the P4 in a system, but it seems that 800FSB boards are not as common as 533FSBs. If someone has something cheap I'd take it if it only works with the Celeron, but if someone has an 800FSB capable board for cheap I'd be rather happy.
