So, I'm planning to buy a laptop. I started out by looking at the low
end of new ones today at the big box stores, and I thought I would run
some questions by all you gurus out there. The lowest end of the laptop
market today is so kick ass, maybe it doesn't matter anymore, but here
goes.
I found several CPU's being used in the lower end. Which one's do you
all like for Linux on laptops:
AMD Turion 64
Intel Core Duo T2050
AMD Sempron 3400
Obviously the Sempron just being a simple 32 …
[View More]bit processor was quite a
bit cheaper, but the 64 bit and dual cores have become pretty price
competitive. There was also an AMD Turion Dual Core, and the Intel Core
2Duo, but those were in a higher price bracket. I guess the question
is, would you take a 32 bit dual core over a 64 bit single core, and is
it even worth 200 bucks to go there over a single core 32 bit processor?
Then the other question I would have is did any one go out to the early
sales on Friday and get some great deals that they'd be willing to pass
on for some cash above what they paid? I'm also not above considering a
used laptop, but with the price/performance of the new laptops today,
can a used one really compete?
Let me just add that I want to do some mobile audio recording, but I'll
probably get a USB2 audio card for that. Do you think it will matter
what CPU I get for that to work well?
Discuss.
Thanks,
Jim

I would disagree with that statement. Specially when it comes to Linux.
nVidia I believe is much better supported in the Linux world.\

You'll want to be careful about WiFi and video chipsets. Not sure on the
WiFi,
but be sure you don't get an nVidia chipset if you need 3D performance.
ATis
up to the X850 and Intels should be good, though...

I am looking for a MapLinx, Microsoft Maps or ESRI Buisness Map Replacement
in OSS Software. Is there any such beast out there? On-line services will
work as well if they provide the same functionality.

Yesterday I purchased a 250 GB Buffalo NAS LinkStation. It works fine
from my Ubuntu box, but from my wife's Mandriva box, I can't get it to
be writable by a normal user, only by root. The SMB mount shows up as
read only, even though I'm not specifying the read only parameter. The
share is owned by root, with a group of root. The Buffalo gives me a
limited selection as to what I can specify. It has a built in web
server that allows the setup to occur. Here you can create shared

is set to writable, and there are no access restrictions. I figure
since my Ubuntu box is working correctly with it, it must be something
I'm doing at the mount on the Mandriva box. Any thoughts on what I
might have set wrong?
Thanks,
Jim

This person will be working with me. The people here are great, and the
benifits are very nice. There probably won't be any Java, and the C#/.net
stuff is just if we end up doing any programming with Sharepoint. The SQL
and PHP skills are very important, and the admin, Plone, and Python skills
would be very nice to have.

Well, one solution is don't host the mapping project page on the same
server as the BMezine page.
I looked because I had no idea what it was. I'm not afraid to see what
it is, from home of course, but you should mark it as NSFW and maybe
with, ewww, look what they did to the ding-ding. I have to say that is
one site that grossed me out and amazed me at the same time. Weird what
people who are bored can do to themselves.

I may be guilty of overestimating the knee jerk potential here.
But- playing it from my original premise let's still not let our
guard down .
"WE" may be able to disconnect easily "best programmer" from
NSFW pictures.
The masses of mundanes sadly are often less open-minded and OSS
gets put at risk.
THAT was why I listed the Edison grandstanding.
As re-assurance that Fear mongering often fails in dramatic
reversa
Political alignment aside- the link was cringe making to me for
it's potential -if nothing else- to get "net nanny" software associating
Linux with "Not child safe" material.
