Backups in a mixed environment

My wife just lost a big chunk of a document she was working on on her Windows machine. She wouldn't have lost it, however, if I'd rigged her box to do a nightly backup to a CVS server or something of the sort on my Ubuntu box. I'm going to setup something like that now, but I'd like your suggestions on just precisely what to use on each end. Server side requirements: 1: Minimal upkeep 2: Backed up files accessible without much hassle on the server side Client side requirements: 1: Easy enough to use if my wife wants to make an unscheduled backup or change the directories/files being tracked 2: Easily scheduled Ideally: 1: The client side software should also exist or have functional counterparts available for Linux and Mac OSX 2: The client side automation should run through Scheduled Tasks/run like a cron job, so that she doesn't have to have yet another permanently memory-resident application in her toolbar. 3: The server shouldn't require more than one or two open ports 4: The network traffic should be encrypted, so that if I chose to do remote backups, I wouldn't have to mess with tunneling. Any suggestions? PS: already pointed out Leapord's Time Machine, and got shot down. No new Macs for us poor folk. I am convinced that SCO and their associates are picked for sheer churlishness above any other quality. http://wifinetnews.com/archives/007571.html Do note that some of the "logic" used is rather incoherent at best. Ah well, at least they are not _yet_ overtly dragging Linux into it. Nonetheless, the perceived linkage is almost as bad in social affect.

I've not seen it in a while either. Their website used to be: http://www.kccomputeruser.com And that doesn't appear to be up. The Wayback Machine's archives for the site stop on 4/06. Back when I worked in JoCo, I used to pick up Computer User pretty regularly. There always seemed to be copies at the bookstores and Microcenter. Now that I work downtown, though, I haven't seen a copy in months. I just started a game where I work that's turned out to be pretty fun. Try to find the oldest posting you've made on Google. Posts have to come from Google's main page, not any of the subsections (i.e. Groups). Currently the oldest I can find from myself is January of 1999, so I don't go too far back. ;) -- Kyle Sexton

Speaking of the Zaurus

My Collie Zaurus SL-5500 is starting to flake out. It died/corrupted itself a while back. When I reflashed it with Hentges, its root partition was corrupted again before the week was out. I'm going to try removing its newer OS and reverting to a circa 2004 openzaurus distribution, since all I really need are madplay, a functioning terminal, and JustReader. I really hate the way these new versions of OpenZaurus et al have gotten so bloated that they need to bleed off into the CF/SD cards for basic Qtopia/OPIE system files. I've seen the PalmOS devices that Tom Bruno and Chris Bier carry around, but the eBook readers on both seem far less functional than JustReader, and the situation seemed to be even worse for PocketPC/WinCE owners when I was trying to hook my dad up with part of my eBook collection in '04-'05. Software issues aside, I've also never seen anything with a screen as large as a Zaurus, although it's been a while since I was really in the market. Short of hitting the lottery I'm not going to be able to afford a Zaurus SL-6000, and they're discontinued anyway. What's a poor boy to do when all he wants is something to play MP3s and read eBooks on? Is there anything on the market that'll run Qtopia/OPIE-based Linux distributions well? Thanks, Sean Crago
