KNOPPIX 4.0 English DVD version released
by Leo Mauler 22 Aug '05

22 Aug '05

I'm thinking to not hand this out at ITEC. Cost issues aside on blank DVDs, apparently the folks making KNOPPIX went hog-wild with all the space they have on a DVD, resulting in menus so big it takes forever to find an application to run. Add in a major bug in the 4.0 release and a few other problems, and it may not be something we want to be someone's first introduction to Linux. ITEC Oct 26-27 Overland Park Convention Center
by Chris Bier 21 Aug '05

Hi All, I've signed the ITEC[1] agreement[2]. We're going to be a "Strategic Partner" again this year. We get a free 10'x10' booth with carpet and 5 Amp service, and free tickets to ITEC (a $295 value!). We will probably want to upgrade the electric service, but it will cost extra. We can also run our own session on a topic we pick. [1] ITEC is Oct 26-27 at the Overland Park Convention Center http://www.goitec.com/live/15/events/15KCM05/ [2] http://www.kclug.org/KCLUG-ITEC_partnership.pdf Chris -- I digitally sign my emails. If you see an attachment with .asc, then that means your email client doesn't support PGP digital signatures. http://www.gnupg.org/(en)/documentation/faqs.html#q1.1

Open Source 3D Games

I haven't been much of a gamer, but I recently purchased Allied Assault and have become quite addicted to it. I was amazed to find that there are completely open source FPS out there, though from what I understand, the quality isn't up to current proprietary standards. >From what I can see of the movies, though, the gameplay isn't too bad. Here are some links to check out if you are interested: http://www.nexuiz.com/ - a FPS http://www.planeshift.it/ - More of a RPG than a FPS, but looks neat. Enjoy! Josh

apache/php problem
by Jack 19 Aug '05

19 Aug '05

I've got some funky behavior with my web server. I have rebuilt the box, and now the index.php page isn't displaying. Here's the problem: http://www.amason.net/ gives me a app/x-trash error, and the page is the wrong page. It is serving an old index page and I don't know where it is reading it from. However, http://www.amason.net/index.php serves up the right page. Furthermore, http://www.libertymason.org/ serves up the index php page for the virtual host. I've only got one document root. The add-type are in httpd.conf. The mod_php module is loaded and works. I've added php to the index module config. I have to believe there is something wrong with my config, but I'm stumped. Maybe something to do with amason being in the main section configuration. Thanks, Brian __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Hello, KC!

My wife and I (currently both Gentoo users) just moved to Riverside. Looks like we just missed an Installfest; oh well ^^;; I used to be a member of SCOSUG (Southern Connecticut Open Source User Group) so this is the second LUG I'll have been a member of (and my wife's first, if she ends up acting memberish) I'm currently looking for a job. Need to find something quickly so we can pay next month's rent, so that's my top priority right now. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate it! (my resume is at http://dashjr.org/~luke-jr/myself/resume/ ) I noticed the thread about free 3D games in the archives, so I'll start off with a shameless plug: http://armagetronad.net Don't bother with the latest stable-- it's missing too many features. Just grab the latest CVS branch b0_2_8 ;) Luke-Jr P.S. kclug.org's mail server is misbehaving and rejecting mail from my server. Can someone fix? Thanks. :/ <kclug(a)kclug.org>: host kclug.org[139.146.133.42] said: 554 Service unavailable; Client host [24.145.163.67] blocked using dnsbl.sorbs.net; Dynamic IP Addresses See: http://www.sorbs.net/lookup.shtml?24.145.163.67 (in reply to RCPT TO command)

RE: Text Editors

If doesn't matter on platform, I'd look into UltraEdit. http://www.ultraedit.com/ Probably the best all-around editor I've used. Packed with tons of features. UEStudio supposedly has even more programming orientated features, but I haven't used it. You can get the Ruby extensions for syntax highlighting here: http://rubygarden.org/ruby/ruby?UltraEditExtensions UltraEdit is Windows based, but I hear tales of you can get it running on Linux with Wine. People have been begging for years for a Linux version, no tell if one will ever be developed. This guy has some info Ruby on Rails Development on Windows: http://brosinski.com/stephan/2005/06/14/ruby-on-rails-development-on-window… -----Original Message----- From: kclug-bounces(a)kclug.org [mailto:kclug-bounces@kclug.org]On Behalf Of Josh Charles Sent: Thursday, August 18, 2005 8:57 AM To: kclug(a)kclug.org Subject: Text Editors I realize I could be initiating a religious war here, but I'm at my wits end. I've been working in Ruby lately, which has been going really well, but I'm having trouble finding an editor that fits me needs (or wants, I guess). Here's what I'm looking for: Syntax Highlighting Line Numbers File Browser that automatically updates with file system changes while the program is running Some Code Completion (not neccessary, but nice) It seems like these are easy requests, but it's the file browser that keeps killing off editors. I've tried both the EMACS and VI Rudy plugins and found both to be lacking. Not to mention the extremely unintuitive nature of both editors (to my mind at least). For Code completion, I'm just looking for simplicity, really. For example, when I time a ' " ' just add the closing one. Automatic tabs is another completion feature that is really handy. I've found TextMate, which only runs on Mac OS X. It fits my needs perfectly, but the mac I have access to is extremely slow, and I'm probably not going to have access to it for very long. Does anyone know of any editor that can meet my needs? It doesn't matter what platform of the three (Linux, Mac OS X, or Windows). I've tried to many and google has long ago quit spitting out good results. Knoppix 4.0 is due to be released. I checked yesterday and it was not on the mirrors in the US yet. We could also do some damnsmalllinux and Mepis disks. I have at least 2 PCs that can burn at home. Feel free to donate any current Live CDs. In the past, we've handed out Knoppix and the win32 Open Software CD. Chris
