MSIE slipping further?

I was looking at my web site statistics for December, and the "Browsers" category shows the following percentages: MS Internet Explorer 58.6 % FireFox 24.8 % Mozilla 8.1 % Opera 2.3 % Unknown 1.6 % Netscape 1.5 % Safari 1.4 % Konqueror 0.8 % Galeon 0.2 % Others 0.1 % According to the OS stats, 84.2% of the site's visitors were running Windows. Is anyone else seeing numbers like this?

Looking for some help

I had a working Suse 9.0 system until I decided to get Mandrake 10 to try out and see what the proverbial "fuss" was about. Ever since getting Mandrake, my computer life has been hell. It continuously locks up, and when I attempt to download fixes, it constantly complains about missing files and servers that don't respond. Anyway, I'm chalking this one up to a bad experience and am wishing to move on. My problem is like this. I dual booted Suse and Mandrake hoping that lilo would allow me to select the distro I wanted. Well, it allows me to select Mandrake, but the Suse partition is not selectable. I am looking for advice on how to get back to booting up with Suse... -Joe

MAN pages

I have noticed a tendency in the MAN pages to refer people to the system administrator. This ends up as a really nasty catch-22 when I am trying to figure something out because I *AM* the freaking' system administrator. What is the point of looking stuff up in the man pages when it says "you may need to refer to your system administrator for the names of such devices. . . "? If I KNEW the freakin' names I would be using them and doing productive work and not wasting time with the MAN pages - SHEESH I encountered this scenario while trying to get a UMAX1220P scanner working under fedora core2. All the google stuff is really shallow and the MAN and INFO stuff don't give me much to go on. Has anyone got any experience with this and could you throw me a lifeline??? It is an old parallel port connected scanner - but it is all I have available right now. I don't plan to use it much and I would REALLY hate to pop for a USB connected scanner until I see some light at the end of the tunnel. Any suggestions???

See comment about reading the sane documentation. UMAX1220P is a supported device if I recall but, is probably one of the hard to configure ones. Best bet is to stick with USB and SCSI scanners. Parallel port scanners are a notorious b**ch to work with. I know I have one. What man page are you reading? I'd have to say hooking up a generator to your house circuit is a pretty dangerous thing. I'm not electrical expert, but I used to build mainframes and the power systems that went with them. While it is possible to do what you are doing, it can easily burn up your house and fry the electrical worker if you do anything incorrectly. As Duane said you need to make sure your wire is thick enough. Where he gets the crazy Idea to drive your house off of 10 gauge wire is beyond me. While it may be possible, it's (IMO) extremely bad to do. I wouldn't use anything less than 0 cable. Of course it also depends on the length of run from your generator to the circuit. Anything over 3 feet you'll want to use a heavier gauge than 10 or risk burning up your house (depending on what kind of current you draw of course. If you have a 100AMP service and are powering everything from the big screen TV to the dishwasher,hairdryer,vacumm, power saw, oven, microwave, washer, dryer, furnace, water heater, 3 bedrooms, two baths, etc. - then things might get pretty hot. Some generators are designed to do exactly what you are wanting to do. I'd keep usage to a minimum and unplug any device that is always on (TV, VCR, many digital electronics), and be discriminate in the use of power. You'll definitely want do as Duane suggests and check the Hz and voltage coming out. Anything in the range 50-60 Hz is fine and from 110-120V/220-240 (even 100/200 wouldn't be too bad). Be extremely careful and make sure your set up is well grounded and check, double-check and triple-check that the main is open. Bottom line is there are so many variables that if your aren't at least proficient with electricity you should never attempt it. It sounds as if you have some level of competency, but then that can be dangerous in it's own right. OT: generator for ice storm

This is way off topic, but related to a recent thread. I have a 5500 watt generator that might see some usage tonight or tomorrow. In the 2002 ice storm I fed the 240 out of the generator and into my ac 2 pole breaker to feed the electrical panel in the house. I threw the main while doing this and had no problems. Now, thinking about the coming storm I was looking at the possibility of doing this again. Everything you read on the the Internet says you are crazy for doing this and risk frying your generator, killing a linesman, or burning down your house. My question for you electrical whizzes is if I absolutely, positively remember to throw the main when doing this, what are the real dangers then. Is it just warned against because someone _might_ forget to throw the main or are there dangers even if the main is thrown. TIA, Brad --
