>From what I've read of Icecast, you can set the number of allowed connections. You can also set the bitrate of the file to lower the cost in bandwidth. If you wanted to keep someone from listening to it again, then you might do some things w/ a cookie. Better idea is to just let them download the file and listen multiple times if that is legal with the file you post. You don't really need a T-1 to serve it up unless you want 20-30+ users simultaneously. streaming media question

Got a question. I want to implement a media player on my website. A 30 second audio. I have access to a T1 to serve it up, but I of course have bandwidth limitations for my box and need to be able to throttle the bandwidth used by the media link and also I want to track concurrent users and be able to throttle accordingly per user, or to reject users because throttling X number of users would make it useless. So any one know ways of doing this? Thanks, Brian

If you do a lot of work with ipsec vpn's, Cisco documentation recommends a mtu of 1300 on all systems. In my testing about 1330 is typically safe.

Well we are talking about a storage capability of 3.4 x10(38th) [that's terabytes to the almost the 9th power]. That's an awful lot of storage and although there might be at some point in the future the capabilities of using such massive amounts of data, it simply doesn't compare to Billy boy's 640k statement. Not to mention we aren't even close to achieving that kind of storage device. Oh sure we could probably build one with current technology, but the cost would be prohibitive and it would probably require liquid cooling. [OT] Forsale: Apple Network Server 500

I'm doing some cleaning up of the apartment and I have a Apple Network Server 500 that is taking up some floor space and I'm trying to get rid of. Specs are as follows. Apple Network Server 500/132 RISC 132mhz PPC 604 cpu 32mb of ram(upgradable to 512mb) 6 PCI slots 7 scsi bays(one holding a 2gb drive, one holding a cdrom, and another holding a dds2 drive) Runs an Apple version of Aix 4.1.4.1 (media included) This thing is a monster it's basically the size of a minifridge. Altho its a bit outdated, It can run ppc linux and netbsd. It was Apples first attempt at the server market and not too many sold. It runs and has plent of extras(I'll throw in a 14in apple monitor w/ converter and couple keyboards). That wasn't the point. The offering was for 6+ mo but looking at the ad further one can deduce it is really 3 months. If you don't like it or smell a rat, walk on by. I for one appreciate seeing Linux job postings, even though I'm not in the market for a job. It gives me a means by which to gauge how people are actually using Linux. But hell, even an entry level position is a foot in the door. And whether it is 3 months, 6 months or 10 years is more likely to be determined by whether or not you're a pleasant person to work with, whether you're any good at the primary job role, and whether you're hopelessly over- or under- qualified. And probably in that order. Though I suppose it is much easier to sit back and assume conspiracy theories and plots against yourself. Much easier to sit on the sidelines and carp. LAX Outage due to Windows Crash

According to TechWorld (http://www.techworld.com/), recent outages at LAX are due to poor integration of an "upgrade" from Unix to Windows: http://www.techworld.com/opsys/news/index.cfm?NewsID=2275 They report that "The servers are timed to shut down after 49.7 days of use in order to prevent a data overload, a union official told the LA Times. To avoid this automatic shutdown, technicians are required to restart the system manually every 30 days. An improperly trained employee failed to reset the system, leading it to shut down without warning...". I dunno about the rest of you, but I can schedule a Windows server to reboot once a week if it's running software suspected of not releasing resources when it should. Wonder why they can't? Wasn't it Microsoft itself that said that Windows should NOT be use for "Mission Critical Applications"?
