Is anyone using newer (~ 1 year or newer) video cards that are supported by some flavor of linux? If so, do you have any comments? I'm researching for a new box, so any info is appreciated. TIA Tim Reid

Interesting how they cite, but ignore this part: A work consisting of editorial revisions, annotations, elaborations, or other modifications which, as a whole, represent an original work of authorship, is a ''derivative work''. How is a "plug-in" or "driver" any different from an elaboration?

:What Linux tool can print from MS Publisher? And retain formatting.too. Google has been no help

Ok- this one is a real brick wall so far. Every lead seems to be a not quite ready. What does anyone on the list know about a Linux based tool to at minimum print from MS Publisher 2002 or so? -- Oren Beck 816.729.3645

OCR
by bewkard 07 Apr '08

07 Apr '08

I have finally had it with paperwork. This last tax season did me in. I've talked to a couple people about using OCR to store documents digitally. I know that a few people on the list do this as well. I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips about what works and what doesn't work. Is it better to OCR things? is it better to scan and save a PDF or some other portable document? Again, TIA Tim

A question on the "read only" kernel details.
by Oren Beck 05 Apr '08

05 Apr '08

In a long past architecture the "OS" was in hardware based literal ROM. And a further question came up that shows my ignorance of real applied usages. The full experiment is in direct result of my NOT knowing in advance how to make this work. And wanting to have it for daily use if it does. Since it has become trivial to run Ramdisk Distros I am planning on an experiment. Recently I noticed several USB cards have one or more ports facing towards the INSIDE of the case. The logical to me use will be loading some bootable from USB drive version onto a properly sized flash drive. So far it looks like a "so what" trivial re-inventing trip. This is more my asking for direction in both WHICH distro is suited to do this with and some help in directions for making it do what is needed for this. The devil for me is in the details of altering that installed distro so it can use a drive not part of the same one it lives on. YES this appears to be a tangent or even restatement of the post RE: OS and Data isolation. This is a case detached from that for a different reason. Flash memories of some cheaper design have limited write cycles. Having the OS on a flash drive that only gets written to when the OS itself is changed as in moving from a 5.x up to 7.06 type change. So the flash will not be "worn out" -- Oren Beck 816.729.3645

Seeing as Oren invoked my experience with my Frankenputer and master/slave drive stuff, I'll allow that Ubuntu 7.10 exceeded my expectations when I did the rebuild on my tower. I won't bore the list with a lengthy blow-by-blow, if anybody out there is interested, it is a weird story involving both hardware and software and a relative newcomer to the Linux world. Any interested parties can contact me directly, will be happy to share the story and, I assure you, it is a strange one!

Selling my semi-new project PC.
by feba thatl 03 Apr '08

I tested the waters on this back in October, and I do need to sell it. I'd rather give it to (and deal with) one of you than some random craiglist person, so I'm putting it up here first. For info on it, what I wrote back then will suffice: > a bit of backstory, I actually purchased the parts for this in March, put it > together, didn't work, half a dozen RMAs later I finally get a working CPU, > GPU, and mbrd, but then I find my old computer's monitor doesn't work with > it. It SEEMS to boot fine, but again since my monitor doesn't work I can't > be sure, and you'd have to get it working with your own monitor and such. > > ASUS P5N32-E SLI LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard - > Retail (Hurray for copy/paste) > Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 Conroe 2.66GHz LGA 775 Processor Model BX80557E6700 > - Retail > 2 GB of RAM, DDR2. The RAM sticks are 1066, but the motherboard only goes up > to DDR2 800. > EVGA 320-P2-N811-AR GeForce 8800GTS 320MB 320-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 > HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail > Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard > Drive - OEM > LITE-ON 20X DVD±R DVD Burner With 12X DVD-RAM Write Black SATA Model > LH-20A1S - Retail > MITSUMI Black 1.44MB 3.5" Internal USB 2.0 digital card reader with Floppy > Drive - OEM > > And for the case and powersupply (again, unsure of the old computer) > XCLIO WTSL Fully Silver Finish 1.0mm SECC/ ABS ATX Full Tower Computer Case > - Retail > Antec True Power Trio TP3-650 ATX12V 650W Power Supply with Three 12V Rails > - Retail > I got a new monitor, and still have had no luck with getting a picture to show up. Without a way to see what's going on, and no other computers to pop parts into to see if something is fried, I'm at a dead end. I don't know if there is a piece of hardware that doesn't work or what, but obviously **it's being sold as-is**. I have the user manuals for the CPU, DVD drive, case, graphics card, power supply, and motherboard. Other than that, I can't promise I'll be able to find all the loose ends (boxes, papers, cables and parts I didn't need), although I believe most or all of the case parts are inside a storage bin inside the case itself (it came with the case, which is pretty sweet). It does not come with a monitor. I can toss in some crappy five cent keyboard and MS mouse I have, and Ubuntu CDs, if you need them (although I doubt anyone here does). I'm looking for 1k; parts would cost about 1200 to buy new, and I spent at least 1800 on it. Unless whatever isn't working is the CPU, you should have no problem replacing it and still getting it at a good price. I should be able to show it to anyone interested any reasonable time this weekend or next week. It can be plugged in to show it's current state of working and lack-thereof if you're interested. Keep in mind that it is a very large case, so if you have problems carrying heavier or larger items, you might want to get a friend to help you get it out of your car and into your house.

Does Linux have a CMOS Setup Application, possibly from a LiveCD?
by Leo Mauler 03 Apr '08

03 Apr '08

I've got a PIII-1Ghz system which I'd like to use until it dies. Right now it works fine, except that the rear PS/2 ports seem not to work. This is a recent development, as the computer worked fine with a PS/2 keyboard and mouse up until I moved it from the basement office into the living room (I just acquired a used TV with a VGA port on the back). I'm using it right now to type this message because when the motherboard gets past the point where I can use CMOS Setup (pressing Del), the motherboard recognizes a USB keyboard and USB mouse even before an OS loads. Pressing DEL to get into the onboard CMOS Setup utility does work from the USB keyboard. However, the onboard CMOS setup utility apparently only recognizes a PS/2 keyboard and not a USB keyboard, because once inside the CMOS utility the keyboard keys don't function. The only way out of the CMOS Setup screen is the power button on the computer. In Ye Olden Days of PC/MS/DRDOS, there were CMOS Setup Utilities which could be run from special boot disks. If such an application still exists, and works for modern CMOSes/BIOSes, I suspect that it is the only way I'm going to be able to change the system time on this computer, or more to the point tell the motherboard BIOS that the Legacy Keyboard option is disabled. Such a Catch-22: because the PS/2 keyboard doesn't work, I can't tell the BIOS that the PS/2 keyboard doesn't work, so that it should accept a USB keyboard when editing CMOS so I can tell it that the PS/2 keyboard doesn't work. This is really frustrating because I know every other component on the system works. I've successfully installed Ubuntu Linux 7.10 without a hitch on this same PC. I just want to make some basic changes to the CMOS/BIOS, but I can't until I figure out how to get into CMOS Setup without a PS/2 keyboard. ____________________________________________________________________________________ OMG, Sweet deal for Yahoo! users/friends:Get A Month of Blockbuster Total Access, No Cost.
