It actually looked pretty clear and good, I am just not sure how I would deal with the keyboard as I have a mangled finger from a few years ago. GPL Vs FCC Vs Common Sense- A triangular entanglement that defies easy reconciliation.
by Oren Beck 26 Apr '08

26 Apr '08

GPL is quite explicit in intent. America's FCC has an assigned mandate equally both explicit and critical. As in "Life Safety" critical. Common Sense fails with potentially deadly results to mediate the conflict between GPL and FCC rules. Here's why and how. Hardware bound RF gear formerly required "hands on" manipulations to violate designed in interlocks. For that fact-we were a bit safer from "Life Safety" systems being crashed. Either by accident or malice.. We are now in a time when our world's interwoven RF systems have become literally a LIFE SAFETY critical realm. And that's understating it for some cases! Folks- we have simply too many of what Larry Niven labels "Fuggheads" to allow certain risks. Yet prudence dictates sanity AkA "Common Sense" in evaluating the real balances between things like GPL and full ownership of our hardware-as opposed to screw ups killing people. SO- here's my take on a possible De Facto gambit we modders/coders/other involved parties can do. And it's a simple short sketch. 1.Advocate for risk management guided by Reality..As Common Sense is NOT always Reality. 2 Repeat #1 3. Failing steps #1 and #2 WILL have us deep in several different sorts of the unpleasant #2 Oh yeah- if you think me alarmist? contact me OFF LIST and I will scare you into awareness... Inexpensive PCI Wireless card now at Microcenter
by Leo Mauler 23 Apr '08

23 Apr '08

I was browsing through the wireless network cards at Microcenter (93rd & Metcalf) and came across a "generic" (or at least "no brand name") wireless card for $19.99. The chipset is a RA2561T, the "AWI-926T" model name seems to indicate that it is an "Amigo" network card. It does 802.11g and 802.11n, and when I got it home Ubuntu found it and used the RALink driver with no difficulty getting it to connect to my 802.11g wireless router. Cards using the RALink driver are among those recommended by the Free Software Foundation. I thought I'd mention this in case anyone is looking for a cheap, Linux-compatible, FSF-recommended chipset wireless PCI card. It is one of the few boxes which isn't shrink-wrapped so you can verify the chipset for yourself (if you like). ____________________________________________________________________________________ Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! History lesson that may explain the XSS exploit's causes and preventions.
by Oren Beck 20 Apr '08

20 Apr '08

Active Scripting is one of those power tools that demands cautious application. We were warned. We ignored. We seem to have forgotten and are repeating the same. XSS exploits are seemingly only a repeat of the ActiveX games. http://everything2.com/e2node/Microsoft%2527s%2520ActiveX%2520idea%252C%252…. -- Oren Beck 816.729.3645

Dirvish backup system- Is it a viable tool?
by Oren Beck 19 Apr '08

19 Apr '08

I was asked to check Dirvish out by one of my campers today. He said it replaced Retrospect for his company. The initial searches and review I have made seem good- unless something else has replaced it. Anyone here have any "hands-on" with Dirvish? http://www.dirvish.org/ -- Oren Beck 816.729.3645

printing an image on multiple pages
by David Nicol 18 Apr '08

18 Apr '08

so I've got this image, it's graphviz output, and it's long and skinny, and I want to print it on a series of pages. The KDE print system "poster" utility looks llike the right tool for the job but ghostscript 8.62 chokes on poster's output, even after the input has been massaged by running it through ps2epsi. I had thought firefox would print a large image to multiple pages but I appear to be have been mistaken about that. Anyone have any ideas? -- bringing useful insights from Computer Science to the larger world

Need some help on AV, specifically, using my monitor as a TV
by Andrew Thoreson 16 Apr '08

16 Apr '08

This is kinda hard to sum up neatly, so I'm sorry the title is somewhat confusing. Basically, I'm wondering if it would be possible to hook up devices that would normally go to a TV to my computer and then watch them on that. For example, hook up my Wii, and then have the video from that show up in a window (or fullscreen), so that I can use my monitor instead of my TV, and I can take screenshots of it. If this is possible, what kind of hardware would I need to take a video-in signal, and what programs would be able to have it stay in a window and/or run it in fullscreen? Also, potentially, record video. I've seen some distros that are made to function as DVRs/media devices, but I'd prefer to keep my Ubuntu install that I have now. I've seen some talk of setting up TV tuners, but those seem to just receive broadcast signals, which isn't really what I'm looking for.

Iron Man remix possibly derogatory of Linux?

http://io9.com/378102/iron-man-armor-now-comes-with-proprietary-software Either this is a clever PR stunt for the MS fanboi hack who came up with it- or is it FUD? "FUD is a tarbaby" -- Oren Beck 816.729.3645
