ITEC in October

high softirq

I have 6 identical IBM blades and all are running RHEL 3, kernel 2.4.21-40.ELsmp. They are dual 2.8 Xeons with 4 GB RAM. Most of the blades that are not in production have a resting load average of 0.00 to 0.08. One particular blade has a resting load average of 0.2 to 1.3. Even when I shut down just about every service it hovers around 0.3. The load looks to be coming from softirq. How can I track it further? irq looks fine, as does iowait and context switching, at least as far as I can tell. Question about Linspire

I'm looking at getting a complete Powerspec system from Microcenter (I'm being lazy and wanting to buy off-the-shelf instead of going the self-assembly route). It comes with Linspire already installed but I'm going to wipe the drive and install Debian instead (I'm really liking the netinst install option). Is Linspire radically different from other Linux versions, in terms of what it runs on? I'm wondering if running Linspire means you can run nearly any other Linux version, or if there is something special about Linspire, such as built-in support for, say, winmodems and related Windows-only devices, which would make it run on hardware which other versions of Linux wouldn't run on. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I've had good luck with Foundry Network's ServerIrons, which you can get for cheap on EBay. RADWare devices aren't that bad either. I know a bunch of people that swear by RADWare and nothing else. Not sure about price on those however. I've found them both easier to administrate than a BigIP, which actually isn't that tough. OT:Help[-we've lost our cooling @the campground

We've had a compressor failure in our condensing unit at the campground. Anyone on list have-or know where we can get cheap either a 3 ton piston compressor or a complete condensing unit- that's the "outside part" of a house style central unit. TIA Oren Beck 816.729.3645

OT: load balancers

Does anyone have experience with load balancer/ssl accelerator appliances? We need 2 and I don't think I can them to spring for BigIPs. We are looking at Kemp Technologies and their 3620 with 1000 ssl tps. Backups

Well, I've done it again. My /var partition went south today on my server. I couldn't find my backup media. It wasn't a full backup anyway. For some reason that partition kept my system from booting. Not sure what's going on there, unless I had a link from /usr to /var (a very real possibility). Anyway! I've just bought a DVD+RW writer for the server. The goal is to make a complete backup of the system onto a DVD, that can be used to rebuild the system. Question 1: Is it possible to 'dd' directly onto a DVD medium, so that it could be 'dd'ed back onto a new HD? Question 2: How would one best copy the entire file structure onto a dvd to make it a bootable media, so that it could be used as a boot device? Answers must be suitable for a CLI only system as this is a server and has no X. Thanks, Brian JD
