Efforts to decouple Mozilla dependacies in Debian

In the interest of interesting discussion, I saw this interesting tidbit today on a Debian developer's personal blog [1]: Debian has managed to completely decouple XUL from Mozilla suite. So you can now install things which use Gecko's rendering engine without installing the 30 MB beast along with it. Good news for Gnome. Many of the projects are poorly managed, noone can put their foot down on things like terrible performance and memory usage that makes people who are used to embedded systems have knightmares. It's great to have a lot of collaboration on projects and all of the community contributing. When it comes to leading a well defined project, timelines, and tuning, thats where things fall off now. In order to vastly improve Linux in the years to come the major project will likely undergo change to better manage things. Another thing that could be mentioned is many of the projects attempt to play catch-up with MS Windows. I'd like to see more innovation inside projects that isn't trying to mimic Windows which would be less feature immitation driven. That way you could focus on writting good software instead of mimicing features, and falling behind of what MS does. They have plenty of money and very good coders to add features and make it work. Whatever happened to filtering mail to a folder and deleting en masse if you were too busy to catch up? I once got about 500 mails behind on this list and just wiped em all out and considered myself officially caught up. After following Rick's email and looking around at MLUG, why don't we do the same thing that they have? It seems to me that kclug(a)kclug.org should be for Q&A specifically relating to Linux issues; and, quite frankly, I wouldn't give a damn how the email was formed as long as it had some _content_ that answered someone's question ... opinions, religious matters, politcs, flamewars, etc. would be moved to kclug-discussion(a)kclug.org . By looking at their mailing list archives, it seems that MLUG's application of this idea seems to have worked quite well for them... Thoughts? -- Jason Clinton <me(a)jasonclinton.com>

Registrars / hosting...

I noted in the archives the discussion about registrars. I have been pretty happy with mine at dreamhost.com. Hosting isn't bad either, not to mention their gimic of a free domain hosted (they cover registration fees) for life as long as you stay with them. I have a few domains that run through them and they seem pretty reliable. Just thought I would throw my 2 cents in. -John Frakes

Registrars

Well, the votes are in, it looks like godaddy gets three votes, poehosting gets one and dyndns gets one. Oh, and as far as the backup mailserver goes, email is relatively self-healing anyway. I say that a backup for kclug is unnecessary. Almost all mail servers will keep trying for five days or so, and if the mailman server is on a machine that's not accepting mail, storing rejected mail on a backup won't really help matters any. Which wireless card?

Hi everyone. I'm new to this list. I have a rather basic question that is Kansas City specific. I've set up a box which is running Ubuntu Linux. I'd like to connect it to our home wireless network. We have two Windoze machines connected using LinkSys equipment to Internet being served up by Time Warner. Does anybody have suggestions about which wireless card will work with my Linux box? Also, does one run the executable file on the CD or does one have to copy files directly? I found the networking app on the Ubuntu menu and it looks like I can configure the network (network name, WEP) once I get a device installed. Thanks for any help on these basics. Chuck

Signing off from this list, with many thanks for the support of those of you who got that there is such a thing as an "open source spirit". (*0.23* seconds)" That would include Brian, Jason, Jim, Chris, Oren, and several others who could speak to my relatively low level of expertise, without condescending, or indulging in childish scolding for any lack of knowledge on my part. It was fun giving Linux a whirl on the desktop, and still use it on my laptop. May try it again when it catches up with my home hardware, but since I have had no burning questions for some time, and have nothing topically noteworthy to contribute at this time, it makes good sense for me to log on to the KCLUG Website and find the instructions for removing myself from the list. I don't think that as a home / home office user only, that the discussions that are of interest to the vast majority of this group, professionally or otherwise, apply to me.
