On-line services will work as well if they provide the same functionality. SMB Setup

Yesterday I purchased a 250 GB Buffalo NAS LinkStation. It works fine from my Ubuntu box, but from my wife's Mandriva box, I can't get it to be writable by a normal user, only by root. The SMB mount shows up as read only, even though I'm not specifying the read only parameter. The share is owned by root, with a group of root. The Buffalo gives me a limited selection as to what I can specify. It has a built in web server that allows the setup to occur. Here you can create shared folders, and specify if they are Read Only or Writable, and this folder is set to writable, and there are no access restrictions. I figure since my Ubuntu box is working correctly with it, it must be something I'm doing at the mount on the Mandriva box. Any thoughts on what I might have set wrong? Thanks, Jim

Well, one solution is don't host the mapping project page on the same server as the BMezine page. I looked because I had no idea what it was. I'm not afraid to see what it is, from home of course, but you should mark it as NSFW and maybe with, ewww, look what they did to the ding-ding. I have to say that is one site that grossed me out and amazed me at the same time. I'll admit I was wrong about Cobol being a database. I guess it is in the sense that an encrypted text file or a spreadsheet could be considered the same. But you should at least admit that you are dealing with an old piece of crap. Free Software Mapping Project

I suggest we discuss this more either in #kclug or I could start a new channel specifically for it... In particular, we want to see what our planned features are (preferably anything everyone suggests), priorities, and such before we actually start coding. So this would be not just for developers and mappers, but for anyone who would want to use it (which might not require a GPS-- I'd like to support triangulation based on wireless AP signal strengths). :)

Run? How would it use a Cobol database? Cobol is a programming language. There are GNU Cobol components for compiling (gcc, may have to add an extension), but I've never heard of a Cobol database. I'm working with a Sybase database modeling tool on Windows right now (Power Builder 11) and it can work with basically any database and supposedly reverse engineer obscure ones, so they tell me. I'm going to make a broad statement and say that any ODBC-enabled database will work with Winders and you should be able to get it to work with Linux too. Keypoint and Linux?

A client of mine is running his trucking operation using Transcore's Keypoint Trucking Software. His current server is a 486-DX2 vintage machine running SCO UNIX. He has serial terminals to "shell in" to the server. I'm in charge of upgrading his setup. He wants Windblows clients (XP Home most likely) and a new server. I wanted to know if anyone has successfully converted this software to Linux? Seems like it would/could work. Keypoint wants to sell him a highly overpriced, under-rated SCO server but I'm not interested in supporting a SCO UNIX box. I would like to build the server "in-house" and run some flavor of Linux. Keypoint did say that they have a few clients running RedHat Linux for this purpose. They said it uses a Cobol database. Suggestions or comments? -- RtX...
