I really don't want to be an e-mail administrator. Nor do I want to host an e-mail server. There are too many liabilities (spam viruses) associated with it.
But (you knew there would be one) I'm hosting the eGroupware package for my church, which includes fudforum (which I really like).
It's really odd. The Calendar application sends e-mail notifications/alarms just fine. FudForum isn't sending out notifications of subscribed forums or topics.
Here's my maillog file (or today's portion of it after noon):

I can send my sendmail.mc file too if you like. I have it masquerading as mossfam.net.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
You have 127.0.0.1 (localhost) denied in /etc/hosts.deny for SMTP.

I thought I had that "fixed" with an entry in my hosts.allow file:
sshd : localhost 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0 sendmail : localhost : ALLOW ALL : ALL : DENY
The only entry in my hosts.deny file is:
ALL : ALL
Should I have the sendmail entry in the deny file?
Thanks - Jon
You have 127.0.0.1 (localhost) denied in /etc/hosts.deny for SMTP.

libwrap (aka tcpwrappers) uses the service name I believe. Change sendmail to smtp and it might work. Also you don't need the ALL: ALL : DENY line in your hosts.allow, it's doesn't do anything.

I've changed it and we'll see what happens.
FYI - SMTP is not running as a service. Sendmail is (I did a ps -ef and a chkconfig --list to verify).

SMTP is Simple Mail Transport Protocol which is what Sendmail, and every other E-mail server on the planet, uses to send E-mail. It's not a "server" or "daemon", but the "service name" as taken from /etc/services is smtp. That is what tcpwrappers uses to know what port to block.
For example, I assume you're running OpenSSH, but you only put SSH in the hosts.allow and hosts.deny files because that is the name of the service.
