In particular, we want to see what our planned features are (preferably anything everyone suggests), priorities, and such before we actually start coding. So this would be not just for developers and mappers, but for anyone who would want to use it (which might not require a GPS-- I'd like to support triangulation based on wireless AP signal strengths). :)

The factors that make ping time correlation part of this kind of process are validating path viablity,sharing node granualarity informations, and overall matrix integrity potential. Bluntly put-each element that enhances accuracy and stability is a good thing. Potentially I suspect we could in microscale replicate DGPS style correction data.

WiFi is particularly well-suited for triangulation because most APs do not move, and many laptops come WiFi-enabled.

Pinging would require associating with the networks, wouldn't it? Do any cards allow associating to multiple networks and/or scanning at the same time?
I had suggested something similar on kclug chat a while back. specifically, software that could be used in conjunction with each other with three laptops using signal strenght for triangulation. It would require three mobile units in line with each other or parallel with each other running and using some type of free map, Google maps perhaps? i think it is possible to nail wireless transmitters down to the room in a house this way. High rise apartments could be done the same way by two on one floor, and a third under provided the halls ran the same way. the same could be done for locating wireless laptops in any public building.

With a GPS unit, a single laptop with good code could do this just by the owner driving around (assuming the AP isn't moving).

Huh?
So how do you locate the rouge wireless on a network. I have a linksys, very low powered that keeps showing up in my office and I would like to locate it. Is it a printer? Is it someone's wireless they decided to sneak in? Is it in building one, two, or three? I think it may be accross the street but I am not sure. My logs don't show active use from that IP, but just the same, it makes me uneasy.
