They're evolving, reflecting the different way people interact these days and the fact that physical presence is less necessary for installing, troubleshooting, and sharing linux.

Our own group has always had a faction that showed up, another that was list-only, and lately has evolved an IRC-only faction, with some overlap among the groups. I'm sure this is true to varying degrees with others as well.
