Does anyone have a 56K PCI modem that works with Linux that they just have lying around in their basement or computer room? I am trying to get a computer up and running with Linux for my brother in law and the Broadcom modem that he has does not have a compileable driver for the 2.6 kernel. Please contact me off list.
Thanks, Gene

I hate to say it, but a friend of mine spent two years wrestling with Fedora trying to get several PCI modems to work, and ended up giving up on Linux because of it.
External modems almost always work, on the other hand, and require no special drivers.
Gene,
I know that you said PCI, but is it possible for you to use an ISA modem? I've had good luck with the zoom ISA modem I've used with IPCop

It would have to be PCI as the mobo does not have any ISA slots. I think I'm going to check out ALT computers, as suggested by John, to see if I can pick up an external modem. The funny thing is that I had an external 56K modem that I got rid of a couple of months back because I had no use for it. Oh well!

How is the support for USB modems? I picked up a used 56k USR USB from the DAV Thriftstore for half off $4.98... Nice price! Jon.

Now you have three driver layers - USB, Serial-on-usb, and modem.
That said, I run a four-modem Hylafax server with a USB serial adapter that's supported, and it (usually) works just fine. I can't get minicom to talk to any of the serial ports except the first one, but hylafax, getty, and agetty work fine.
