I never trust anything to be simple when it comes to X. Perhaps, the geeklords of X have grown tired of the complexity as well? One can only hope. I hope to one day be able to tell the X config routine I have a 17" monitor and a video card and I want only 1024x768 resolution or better with more colors than I can count, and have X magically configure it for me. Ah ... I can dream, can't I?

It definitely looks like thngs are better than they used to be.

Well, I don't recall that I told the install program that much, and I got that. I presume it queried the VESA monitor and figured out what it could handle. It works well enough I haven't messed with it.
And I'd like to change existing resolutions quickly and easily.
