As someone who only attended one meeting, due to the fact I work nights (have one in the daytime ;) ) the only hardware issue I know of, was they didn't have wireless access for the longest time (by the posts I read). Around the time I first got interested heavily in Linux, and attended the meeting, I got a second job, and started working 7 days a week. That lasted 3 years and I had 6 days off between them (and the second one still wants me back). Now I actually have next Tuesday off, and am wondering if there is going to be a meeting since it is Thanksgiving week? I still wonder what the fuss is about changing the meeting? For those of us south, it seems where it is would be fine, are they kicking us out? -------------- Original message ---------------------- From: "Christopher A. Bier" chris.bier@cymor.com

But meeting at the public library also keeps down attendance. Parking is awful, and with Sprint Center and the P&L district opening, it is only going to get worse. The problems with hardware have already been mentioned.
What problems with hardware? I've never had even an eye blink at the stuff I've brought in and carried out. (Desktops, laptops, bags of wires and parts, and game consoles)
Heck, I work downtown and live five minutes away from the library, and *I* hate dragging my carcass out there in the evening (which is why I don't go to meetings). I can't imagine how much groaning must ensue from folks who actually have to drive in from elsewhere (and fight traffic the whole way).
I've found it very easy to get to and park. All the traffic is heading out of downtown, not into it.
As for the commercial neutrality thing.
Furthermore, the KCLUG might increase membership and activity by taking a more friendly approach to vendors.> do.
To my knowledge, we've never turned down a vendor.

No, someone had the audacity to offer us an excellently equipped professional meeting space, and everyone is just horrified.
I hear we could get a monthly slot at the "Hall of Justice"

I'll bet they have some kick @ss stuff to play with. ;)

I've had no problem bringing in a load of equipment on a 2 wheeler at the library and the elevator is fine. I have had concerns about my safety downtown, but have had no problems yet. I have found a parking lot through the alleyway across the street from the library, but it is quite a way to haul PC hardware or a heavy laptop and accessories. I have found the library's wireless to suck and the network to be slow to hand out DHCP. I have often brought my own wireless router to make DHCP work faster for everyone. I've also often brought extra CAT5 cables for those that forget them. I'd assume a technical business would have plenty of those and no need to drag my "Be Prepared" bag with me. We'd also have plenty of time to complete a Linux install and not leave someone hanging.
My most recent concern with the meeting place is that if I go on a Wed., I go after dropping my kids off; I have Wed. night visitation. So I go right at 8, drive downtown and then have about 45 min. of geek-out til everyone goes to Denny's. So sometimes I wait and just go straight to Denny's to meet everyone. Or I say to hell with it and just don't go. I'd rather drive a bit further to Vital Site and know I could drag in hardware and maybe a meal from a place of my choice. I hate Denny's, they're random crappy service and their lack of ANY WiFi. If someone wants to work on a technical problem at Denny's or any other restaurant, they must beware of food/drink hazards and usually need some Internet connection. Maybe at Vital Site there could be a designated food table away from hardware.
Although it might suck for a while to change the meeting place (it did when the library moved), it sounds like a vastly improved location. I assume the bathrooms are closer than the ones at the library? I think we would be remiss to not at least make a trial meeting there and see how we like it.

Anyone want to do a test run this meeting or next? Seems like everyone just got quiet about this issue.
