any suggestions on specific parts for this? Basically what I need is:
Pref AMD X2 although Intel is 'ok' 2 SATAII hot swap - or at least external bay removable - these will be mirrored <maybe 3 drives and Raid5 - suggestions?> <possibly the boot drive in a bay also> 10/100/1000 Ethernet 1 gig RAM some basic onboard video costs?
Any suggestions for alternatives are also welcome.
This is going to be a colo box for some basic web hosting, email and a bit of ASP(app service provider). The 1U is based on the cost of colo space.
also... All linux raid or mobo hw raid? get a separate card? what is the decision criteria?
With what types of Raid (kernel, mobo, card) is it possible boot off the raid vs need a boot drive
Any suggestions on colo space and costs?
all hardware needs to run under linux kernel 2.6
FYI: I need to get the hardware purchased very soon.

I would get it from Monarch Computers....
If you're just doing mirroring RAID than software raid is just as good as hardware/mobo RAID with the exception that with hardware RAID you get a battery backed cache. But that is only really useful if you aren't on a UPS/generator... but since you a colo'ing this that isn't an issue.
If you're going to do RAID5 however it is best to do it with mobo or hardware RAID to off load the necessary calculations onto there instead of having it in the CPU. I recommend the 3Ware SATA raid cards, they have excellent Linux support.
You can boot of a RAID drive.
Hope this helps...

My kids and I built a live trap. I decided to make it linux powered. It uses a single board computer to monitor a laser beam. When the beam is broken, the computer shuts the trap doors. It was a neat little project and I got to learn how to control things with a serial port. If anyone would like to see it, I put a write up at www.windmeadow.com
thanks chad
