Hi All, I finally got into contact with the correct people at ITEC and should receive the contract for the free both today or tomorrow. For some reason, our info was handled by the people who normally do businesses. Who will be able to man the booth? Which CDs and other stuff will we give out? What cool tech do we want to display?

If it ever actually hits the open market and someone local ends up with one, the ASUS Eee PC would be something cool to show off. It's a very low cost ($199-$399) Ultra Mobile PC that is supposed to run a custom Xandros install on SSD - the only spinning part is the fan. The Linux install is the default config, though they might also ship with a driver CD for WinXP. I've been salivating for a chance to see one hands on for a while now. They "might" ship by mid-Oct. It would be pretty nice to show "hot new tech" at the show while also showcasing the Linux that it runs.

I've asked for the 6th-9th as vacation days, which should be approved with no problem.
I think Ubuntu is the perfect thing to give out to newbies, and it was really popular last year. I doubt we'll be able to get 7.10 in time. Can we get a few boxes of 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) so we don't have to spend our money making those CDs (and maybe do some FOSS for Windows "Gateway Drug" CDs instead)? I forget who the (K)Ubuntu dev is on the list. It would be best to have them in the possession of someone who's definitely going to be there by our Oct 16 meeting at the latest.
Speaking of meetings, for the first time ever, Day One of ITEC will be a LUG meeting day! I don't know if this will be good or bad for attendance.

For Windows FOSS, check out the Open CD. http://www.theopencd.org/ CRAP, their project died! And I even donated! Looks like The OpenDisc is the chosen successor. http://theopendisc.com/ Maybe they're hinting at moving towards a DVD-sized release?

http://portableapps.com also features a load of FOSS. It has the benefit of being self contained, so users can take the suite with them to any USB enabled Windows PC and enjoy life a bit. (can't do much about spyware and viruses...)
Jon.
Good point, and I recommended to the OpenCD maintainer that he should include portable apps, but he explained it duplicated alot of the existing stuff, andthe CD image realestate was in short supply. Plus making it so easy to just jank the USB drive and take the software away has a downside. Only the owner of the USB key will be able to use the FOSS. If it just gets installed everywhere, then even people who haven't heard of it will end up seeing it and using it.

We could have them all downloaded so that we could install them on people's flash drives at ITEC. I'm sure someone will hand out flash drives.

Good idea. Makes the demo PC all the more multifunctional: video attracts the eye, USB port shares the FOSS.
Weird to think about flash drives as free goodies.

I'd love to man the booth again this year. I can bring in a demonstration Linux PC again this year, and I can still print off a couple hundred of the nifty non-confrontational "Five Reasons To Use Linux" brochures I brought last year.
If we could get a box of those Ubuntu CDs again this year, that would be just perfect. We didn't hand out many of the Mac or 64bit Ubuntu CDs last year, so a box with nothing but regular Ubuntu Desktop CDs in it might be better this year.
