Who had the nice graphic for CD Labels from last year's ITEC?
Chris - -- I digitally sign my emails. If you see an attachment with .asc, then that means your email client doesn't support PGP digital signatures. http://www.gnupg.org/(en)/documentation/faqs.html#q1.1
I had some - not sure if anyone else did. "Chris Bier" chris.bier@cymor.com wrote:

BTW, I pulled the HD with the source for a scalable KCLUG Tux With Branding Iron, and did up a decently-large one at http://home.kc.rr.com/mharder/TuxKCLUG.jpg - if you can tell me how big you need one, I can crank it out.

Are we definitely going to have Knoppix CDs again?
Any coordination at all here, or do we live up to our name as a non-organization?

I think bill_c is on this not for sure, chris or bill would know.
bill_c is working on getting trademark permission from Novell for giving out SuSE 9.1 LiveCD's.
If history is any guide, we'll need about 400 CD's to hand out. I think we're currently sitting at < 100.

These are SuSE instead of Knoppix? I definitely want to see something that gives me permission to use a SuSE trademark before I print anything with it. My existing design says Knoppix.

I'm doing 50 Suse 9.1 Live CD's (suse label), and 150 knoppix (with kclug lablel) provided can meet up with Chris tonight.

Good question... it's been awfully quiet on list with Tuesday quickly approaching. Do we need tables, chairs or carpet? I have some folding chairs and I *think* the ex prolly has a folding table we can borrow. I also have a couple of cheap Persians for the floor if needed.
I'm in a sedan now however, and can't really move any of it.

Jon or John (kepht) is going to Tallen's house on Tuesday morning at 10AM? to pick up 2 x 6x3 tables. Don't know about the carpet or chairs.
Slight change of plans, I will drop the tables by Tomorrow (20041026) around 10:30.
Are we on track with everything else we need?
My thoughts on stuff: - The banner (from Hald?) - Some Handout CD's (from Bill_c and Cymor?) - Machines to demo stuff (I have a P4 Winbook running a fresh install of Sarge Debian with a good selection of apps installed that I can leave (someone keeps an eye on it..)) - Networking (will they have wireless (again my notebook has a working wireless card configured) do we need/have a wireless switch, or wired switch? - Chairs - Any kind of poster(s)? - Printed Handout's of any kind? If nothing else a flyer with some linux related links might be helpfull -Someone to be there when ITEC is open? I can be there all day (10-3) on Thursday, if needed.

I've got a P4 2.4GHz box with a gig o' RAM and 15" LCD monitor that can perform whatever functions... and likely can put a couple of PIII units on the pile as well, minus monitors. I can bring a 36-port 10/100 switch (3Com junk) and a D-Link wireless access point (DWL-7100AP, does a and g) if the need presents itself. Will there be any form of Internet access available? If so, I can throw in an IPCop 1.4.0 firewall to hide everything behind.
If anyone has a *nix box that can do S-Video output, I can bring a semi-sexy 20" flat-screen TV too - but we really aught to have something worth "looking at" before we go through the trouble. (I think the resolution in that configuration is likely 640x480 or some such.)
I'll probably also bring my Dell Latitude D800 along, dual booting XP and Fedora Core 2... Obviously won't be letting that out of my sight unless I have something very solid to chain it to.
When we say "demo stuff" what are we thinkin' of, Open Office and the like? I think juxtaposing function X on Windows against open function X on *nix is a pretty good idea to show off inter-operability as long as it isn't a pipe dream. (I.E. create a Word doc on Windows, xfer to *nix and voila, you can still use it, etc.)

Sorry I hit reply versus reply all, heres a second shot at it.
I was just thinking something to show people that Linux is not just a 'ugly hard to use console based operating system' real eye candy with perhaps a family friendly (maybe something along the lines of Xmen2) DVD playing, again showing some of the things the new 'modern' Linux is capable of. Kinda bring together the whole idea of the advocacy thing - to promote the Linux OS, IMHO.
Applications that people would normally use on Windows and how thats done in Linux+X+FOSS, like: - K3B for burning CD's - Firefox for web browsing - Grip for making MP3 files - XMMS for playing MP3 files - Evolution for reading Email - XINE for playing DVD's, Videos - Perhaps both KDE and GNOME for 'windows' (window manager)
Sure we all most likely wont agree that this application is better than that application, but (IMHO) we should show an application that is easy for a 'normal' person to use with lots of graphical features and initutive interface (all the applications I point out above at least have that).
That honestly is my goal to help promote that Linux is not just for geeks, and that it is gaining credibility among corporate arenas thanks to the improvements in user interface design, solid application development and open source mentality.
I think the wireless WAP is a must in any case, so we can at least get our wifi capable notebooks up and running on the net. I will check today if the facility provides wireless (or wired) access (I am delivering the tables in about an hour) and report with any details on that (or anything else I find interesting).
With the recent news of Cymor's accident, I know he was kinda the co-ordinator of this, I think we need to put our heads together work like a team and make this thing happen.

Yeah... let's let this become a rallying point perhaps. I, for one, nominate myself to have absolutely no responsibilities, however. <grin> Seriously - I've had a job interview thing come up at 3:00 pm today, which certainly takes precedence. Do I need to bring gear today for sure, or can I slip in early tomorrow?

Is anyone for sure going to man the booth tomorrow?
I am going to be there all day Thursday
I know we have the entire day today to setup, and you just take the barcode on the signup email you got (hopefully) and they have self check-in machines where you can print your own badge. Sounds to me it would be best to get most of the equipment we can up and working today, but I dont know about security. Surely with all the other exhibitors equipment they will have someone helping ensure the stuff doesn't walk away.
I will go check it out shortly (its like 1/4mile from my office) and repot back, perhaps then you can make your call if you want to setup equipment today/tomorrow or whatever. Any other thoughts on this?

Ok the tables are in, there is a wireless signal but I an not so sure it is intended for Convention exhibitor's usage. There did not appear to be any wired LAN drop.
We are next door to 'Open Technologies, Inc' and 'Sun Microsystems', at least its not the Microsoft booth.

In a sort-of manic fit last night I did up 25 KNOPPIX CDs and 50 DamnSmallLinux CDs with labels. The label is my own invention incorporating the KCLUG logo and the KCLUG website URL, loosely based on a KNOPPIX CD label from the Phoenix LUG.
I figure I'll drop them off at ITEC today in case you start running low on the other, slightly more professional-looking CDs. The DamnSmallLinux CDs I did up just in case you run into some other folks who have lower-end PCs who might bring up that point as a reason they "can't try Linux". The DamnSmallLinux bootable CD runs in PCs as low-end as 486s, and thats running a GUI.

I'm embarassed, I don't have a Linux label printer. :(
I just did it up with something free that came with CD Stomper. No doubt there were leftovers from ITEC, and I'm going to try to come to the next meeting with some CDs I did of DamnSmallLinux 0.8.2, using the same general label.
I used Monty's new KCLUG logo.

No, we ran out. I think we made a tactical error by having both SuSE and Knoppix, because quite a few folks took one of each. Next time if we have two different things to give out, we need to keep the second choice back and parcel it out a bit more judiciously.

And to everyone in kclug that thought I would show up with gear and what not, my most humble apologies. Things have been pretty tight this past year now that I'm on my own - when revenue presents itself, I have to strike while the iron is hot.
Next year, if I'm still KC-based, I will make a better commitment. Dustin
Or just offer a choice instead of a pile.

Because there's bound to be people more in favor of KNOPPIX than Suse, and vice-versa.
