Sigh. We must run such criticism through the JH filter, and see if anything survives.
When facts fail you, fall back to character attacks.
Never use character attacks, even when a character is accusing you of doing so.
When facts fail you, advance forward to methodology and logic.
I like Oren's approach, which is: often more important than who is right is the overall teamwork effect. This is methodology triumphing over fact.
You were disparaging an entire distro: Gentoo. I was revealing that you possibly didn't understand how to run it yet, and that it is better to say kind things about that which you do not understand. You later returned to say kind things about Gentoo. I consider the job well done.

p.s. while we're on the subject of character attacks, is there anything you *don't* disparage? Look through your posts to KCLUG for the past decade and see what I mean. Almost all of mine are off-topic. Almost all of yours are insulting or complaining about something or another. I'm working on getting on topic.
And I haven't corrected anyone's grammar or spelling this year.

My negative average tone has been noticed before, and I apologize if it looks that way.
In part, it's because the two main things I use the list for are to alert other people to problems I've encountered, and to alert others to them.
Unfortunately, it's true that you get far less response to "how do I make this work?" than you do to "this is a piece of crap, it doesn't even do foo!". The former won't elicit any replies, even if people know, while the latter will elicit indignant rage from a happy user, who will slam you down by showing you exactly how it's supposed to be done.
As Montgomery would say, Eexcelent.
Oh, I also tend toward a rather bitter, sarcastic humor, which doesn't help.

Oops.
I meant to alert others to problems, and to seek help in solving them.
