I have just ordered the following printer from Tiger Direct: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=… and will give a report to the list after I get it and have used it some. hplip has been under very active development and cleanup lately, the latest release was this past weekend. That, and strong activity on linuxprinting.org and cups means that things are getting a lot better with regard to printing in linux. That said, I upgraded my Mandriva workstation, and now no matter what I do I can't print to it from my wife's workstation - although my laptop prints to it just fine.

I know an unfriendly printer. Helping a friend install Ubuntu on her computer I experienced problems with the hp Deskjet 3653 printer. It was not automatically detected by Ubuntu versions Breezy (5.10) or Gusty(7.10). When I replaced the hp Deskjet 3653 with a hp Deskjet 6112, however, it was automatically detected, and printed the test page successfully. I found a work around for the hp Deskjet 3653 printer on Ubuntu forums, [url]https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsPrintersHp[/url] (see last line below*), but it did not work for me. I found other posts complaining about the 3653. For example this on from IAmMe1, http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4321732#post4321732, "I know this is a somewhat common problem, but I can't find a good solution that works for me... My HP DeskJet 3653 won't print. First of all, I have the printer connected to a USB port in the back of my box, but when I try to add a printer, the printer doesn't show up under detected printers. I manually select a location, then select the hpijs driver. There seem to be no other problems, until I try to print... It says that the printer has a job, but it's not doing anything. Any ideas on how to solve this?" Make: HP Model: DeskJet 3650 Driver: hpijs Supported: No Works: Yes Version: v5.04 (Hoary) & v5.10 (Breezy) *Not detected. I have an HP OfficeJet v40. I have used Fedora, Debian and Ubuntu successfully with it connected to a print server on my network. They all found it and installed it successfully with minimal fuss. HTH ~Lee

My humble suggestion, ie. what I do: I have 2 + 1 email accounts (not considering my work account). The two are full fledge email accounts with slightly different targets. The 1 is this one which I use almost solely for mailing list. I have Dovecot + RoundCube + Apache + SSL on my Centos5 home server (no configured sendmail, so no mail sending) I use this for mail archival purposed. It has dozens of folders going to (for now) a max depth of 2 folders. I move mail there one it has been read and dealt with, sorted into appropriate folders. So I have as much space as I need + full access to it. My only concern now is setting up encrypted remote backup. -- Fedora 7 : sipping some of that moonshine ( www.pembo13.com )

I doubt that. ts is a fairly standard encoding, and both VLC and mplayer will open the files - they just don't play well. I tested this with some pretty heavy load in the background, so can't say for sure that they wouldn't play. As I said, I know avidemux can handle even larger .ts files; the question there is if the 32b version can handle them. I've managed to find some lower res versions, so that takes care of the problem, but the question remains. I ordered new RAM today.

Video processing

I have some .ts video files that are just under 7 gb in size. They're 1080p HD, and nothing I own appears to want to work with them. VLC and mplayer both seem to freeze on the first frame, avidemux reports it's unable to determine the aspect ratio after trying to index the file, and tovid's idvid returns /usr/bin/idvid: line 261: 16#Stream: value too great for base (error token is "16#Stream") This is on an Athalon 2500 running at 1.8 Ghz with 512 M of ram. What I'm wondering is if I don't have enough ram to handle files this big, or if a 32b processor/OS just isn't capable of it, or if the files themselves are corrupt. I have heard of people handling larger files with avidemux, so I know it's possible. Suggestions?
