ISA's work better because they don't usually require drivers, they appear as a serial port on the ISA bus, but a lot of motherboards don't have ISA slots any more.

ip_conntrack_ftp is a kernel module, but I'm not sure if it is on my firewall or not. A person could just check "lsmod" to see if it is loaded or "modprobe ip_conntrack_ftp" to initiate. Where in the kernel options is the support for this module? Under networking perhaps? The default policy for the Output chain is usually ACCEPT, so there is no need to open outbound ports specifically. The ACCEPT statement on the ESTABLISHED,RELATED line will allow connections to the unprivileged ports since they are related to the connection on port 21. I believe ip_conntrack_ftp helps with this. Thanks for clarifying the ESTABLISHED,RELATED context. I've wondered about that before. So you can that way on a server, not open the unpriviledged ports globally, but allow each connection to open those ports. That's much better. Another Linux consultant startup question

Hope I'm not upsetting the consultants on the list, but I'm going to try and pick your brains again. Thanks for all the help so far! I'm wondering if anyone is using any templates to generate quote documents from or responses to RFPs. I also respectfully disagree with MS Office comparison. Open Office is as far as I can tell more powerful. I've written small books in OO, that can easily be sent in a format that is ready for a printer (printer as in commercial book printer as opposed to the office hardware printer) to use. Also the router/firewall had at the time 443, 222 open. Actually, you probably need a ftp tracking module installed into the kernel; ftp has two ports, the command and data port. The command port is 21, which does things like initiate transfers and list directory contents, etc. It also sends a random number which pertains to the port number for the data port. Now that I think of it, this usually matters much more for the clients, I'm not so sure of the server. I just said that because when I was enabling FTP on my server and thru the firewall, I opened port 20. Course I listened to dj_goku and that may have been mistake number 1. ;-) (We just love to bag on dj_goku.)
