OT: Project Gutenberg's CD/DVD Project

Just wanted to mention this here as I proofread pages of expired-copyright books for them. Project Gutenberg is making its massive collection of plaintext e-books available in CD and DVD images. The latest CD image is "Best Of August 2003"; the DVD covers all of Project Gutenberg from the very beginning to December 2003 (3.85GB). You can download the image yourself, get it through a slightly safer checksum source like BitTorrent, or even have an overworked volunteer mail you a CD/DVD. With its error-checking options they prefer P2P networks, and they're encouraging BitTorrent right now (http://snowy.arsc.alaska.edu:6969/) The DVD is a treasure trove with over 9400 e-books on it (mine will be all together on my hard drive in about two days). I took a humanities course this past spring semester, and it was not only a lifesaver for material, it saved me a bit of money on some of the books required for the class. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Hi everyone... This email could be of interest to people interested in the Perl programming language. I know that in Toronto there is a good-sized overlap between Linux people and Perl people (we occasionally hold "joint sessions" of our user group meetings) so we hoped to share this information with Linux folks more widely. There have been some recent developments on the YAPC::NA front, and it has been suggested to us that a reminder might be helpful to some people, so here's a quick summary of the event. Where does it appear? It sounds like the following example might work for you if you just need a rich tooltip kind of thing http://www.dyn-web.com/dhtml/tooltips/hover-tip.html http://surguy.net/menu/index.html or http://tutorials.alsacreations.com/commentaires/ for CSS-only menus if that helps; you can hack this kind of code to make it work only over a certain <TD> cell. -Jared

Help! I know I must be doing something wrong. Can anyone show me a sample of how to create a pull down menu over a graphic image in a table data column. I prefer a javascript or php solution, but I'll take perl or whatever. I thought I had it, but it's not working. It needs to disappear when not activated and appear when a mouseover or click event happens. I've wracked my brain on this and tried many 'menu code samples' to no avail. Brian D. Discover Yahoo! Netgear - two strikes

So the pub over hear has one of those nifty Netgear MP101 players, connects wirelessly to your PC and plays all your MP3's into your stereo. Handy little simple remote to control it. Problem is, the "server" runs on an XP box with a USB DSL Modem on it. XP thinks this is the primary network device. There's supposed to be a configuration button that lets you tell the Netgear software to listen on a different subnet, but the button doesn't show up (because it's a USB device? I dunno). (The secondary connection is a standard NIC connected to a Cisco WAP.) So I had a Wireless router en-route from the states. Unfortunately, the 7-10 days shipping ended up being 16 days, and I only have a couple of days left. I open the box, and I see "Netgear". Uh-oh. Sure enough, I set this up on the home network, and as soon as I access the configuration pages on the router, it goes offline. Won't respond to "ping" any more. I can unplug it, it will start up and supply an IP address via DHCP, but as soon as I hit the web pages, poof! Wireless connectivity on it defaults to "off", so I'm pretty well sunk here. Oh, it won't pass packets through on the home network either. It would be double-NAT by default, which is probably why. NETGEAR refused to reply to support email unless I registered the music player. I couldn't guess a purchase date their registration site would accept, so that's sunk. I registered the router, but what are the chances that they're going to get right back to me on a Friday afternoon, and that I'll get it worked out by Monday when the movers come. Ah well. Soon I'll be back in the U.S. and I can take this router back and tell 'em where to stick it. The pub's on their own.

Dates again

Just a follow-up on our earlier discussion of why it's important to have your date set correctly: I'm using Squirrelmail pretty much exclusively right now, being in England. SM 1.4.4 doesn't have the ability to sort by order received, nor to find "next unread message". It's not a problem in this list, but in my main inbox I've accumulated six "new" messages buried somewhere in the "past" because their date is incorrect. Most likely just spam, and I'll track them down when I get home, but there it is. I just deleted the offending messages in here that were "stuck" at the top of the list because of their back-to-the-future dates.

I would say that this is a bug in ping, that it would allow x.y to be evaluated as a complete ip address. But what is going on is that ping is calculating the address based on the first and last dot numbers and fills in the blanks with zeros. if you want the RFC explanation for it, I'd have to look it up.
