The C++ Grandmaster Certification is a massively open free online course (MOOC) for expert C++ programmers. It provides the most rigorous C++-specific qualification possible. Participants in the course will demonstrate their comprehensive knowledge of C++ by writing their own fully functional ISO C++11 standard compliant C++ compiler, C++ standard library and toolchain - including a preprocessor, assembler, and linker - targeting the Linux operating system and x86-64 architecture. The toolchain will be written entirely in standard C++. No third-party tools or libraries will be used. As a grand finale the participant will build their toolchain with itself (a self-hosting build) and pass the conformance test with it. Enrollments are open now and close 15th Feb, 2013. Windows RAID backup via System Rescue CD, et al

I have a problem. A Windows server had a hardware failure on a controller. We are currently building an identical server to replace it (not my decision). A certain part of the system doesn't have a current backup (namely my code, plus other things). (I have backups of my code, but there are things important to my code that weren't backed up at the time of the crash.) The server uses a RAID configuration. I don't have the details, not my department, this is a client's machine. I can get them if it helps in giving an answer. We believe the drives are fine. (Although I have my doubts as to the integrity of the data.) I've use Trinity Rescue kit to salvage NTFS drives and partitions without problem. Can System Rescue CD or any of the Linux rescue distros back up a Windows RAID configuration of drives? My assumption is as long as you define the RAID configuration correctly it should be just like any other backup in Linux? Thanks, Jack D

LAMP Server Performance Advice / Job Offer

I work for a consulting / hosting firm in Topeka, and I have a server that is periodically crashing. The last couple of times, it appears to have been due to the server running out of memory. It is a virtual server (on VMware ESX), so I increased the RAM from 2GB to 4GB and the virtual CPUs from 1x single-core to 2x quad-cores. However, it may be a week or more before I can tell if this has resolved the issue. What I am looking for is advice on how to track down the cause definitively, and prevent it from occurring again. (My client is complaining about the downtime.) When this occurred last time (~ a week ago), I installed sysstat to try and track the performance, but when I went to look at today's report, I got a message saying: "Invalid system activity file". Viewing yesterday's report works just fine, so I'm thinking that the hard-reset I performed this morning F'd up the report. We would be willing to pay the right person for their expertise, and I hope to learn something in the process. I'm fairly knowledgeable, but I think I may be in over my head on this one. The OS is CentOS 6.3, and it is dedicated to a single website running the Magento e-commerce software, which relies heavily on MySQL. Any advice or assistance would be appreciated. Off topic: Kickstarter project

I realize this is a bit off topic, but hope it's forgivable as I'd say the crowd funding sites like Kickstarter display a spirit akin to that of the Free and Open Source Software community (i.e. people from all over the Internet pitching in to help bring a project to fruition rather than just big money banks and corporations getting to decide what gets made..) My brother, Sam, just launched a kickstarter project here: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/538185773/monster-of-the-sky-a-mythic-t… If you're not familiar with kickstarter, it's a crowd funding site. According to wikipedia: Crowd funding describes the collective effort of individuals who network and pool their money, usually via the Internet, to support efforts initiated by other people or organizations. Crowd funding is used in support of a wide variety of activities, including disaster relief, citizen journalism, support of artists by fans, political campaigns, startup company funding, movie or free software development, inventions development and scientific research. Basically, once it goes live, they have 30-40 days to meet their goal of $25k for the film or they don't get any of the pledged donations. Contributors' accounts don't get charged unless the team meets its goal, so there really is little risk to donors, and they can get some pretty cool swag as rewards if the project actually goes through. Plus, if you like the idea behind the project, it's a really cool chance to be part of something larger than one's self.
