Anybody want a great big server?

I have a big (and heavy) server in my basement that I'm not using. I think it currently has some ancient version of Gentoo on it but given this audience I'm guessing that will not be kept. The name of the game with this beast was redundancy...it's not too impressive by today's standards, but it should be able to keep ticking through quite a few invocations of Murphy's Law. Dual P3 Server Includes: - Intel SC5000 chassis (may be able to find hardware for rackmount...currently set up for desk side) - Supermicro P3TDE6 motherboard - Dual Pentium 3 850Mhz CPUs (runs stable @ 1.13GHz) - 512MB ECC Registered PC133 RAM (256MB stick x 2) - U160 capable hot-swap drive bay (holds up to 5 1inch drives) - Qty. 5 - 18GB 10k RPM Ultra2 drives - SCSI CD-ROM - SCSI CD-R drive - ATI RAGE XL video card - Integrated 10/100 Intel NIC - Integrated U160 dual channel Adaptec SCSI adapter - 2 64-bit/66MHz PCI slots - 4 64-bit/33MHz PCI slots - Redundant 350W power supply Given the age, the weight, and the probable distance to drive to pick it up, I'm saying it's free to a good home. Missing Robot

A prominent member of Kansas City's robot community had his robot stolen out of his car recently. Installing Linux on Acer One

I was able to install Ubuntu on the Acer One after repartitioning, reformatting, and reinstalling the Ubuntu Live CD on the flash drive. I think I must have screwed up the MBR with syslinux. Works perfectly now. Excellent netbook.

MythTV questions

I finally got my network run over to the MythTV box a couple days ago. I ran updates on the PC and added a couple myth plug-ins that I did not get a chance to choose at install. I know this is weird, but I don't have a TV capture card in this PC. I have digital satellite and like digital cable, the tuner in the cards are not capable of getting all the channels and require a descrambler box. I don't want to mess with an IR blaster and training the family how to use the device. What I do want to do is start getting torrents of TV episodes to the box. Is there anything in MythTV to download torrents? I saw something about RSS feeds, but haven't a clue about getting that going. I think I loaded a myth plugin for a feed reader. How do I find the feeds or what is the best way to go about finding episodes of a couple shows like Heroes, Mentalist, Dexter, Robot Chicken, etc. including past seasons and getting them into the MythTV database/interface? I'm not sure that a torrent program loaded, so I'll have to verify that or get one. I've downloaded torrents before, but the key is to get them into MythTV to make it easier for everyone else. The other thing is that I loaded a plugin for using game emulators within MythTV, called MythGame. Do I have to load the emulators separately via the apt-get process? Any idea how to import the game ROMs. Someone gave me a couple burned CDs full of game ROMs a few years ago and as soon as I find them, I like to get those classic games running. Brian Kelsay

Thoughts on a set-top box

I have a DirecTV DVR which is a pretty slow, stupid box, but is linked to their web site, and I can download what they have on offer. I've messed with mediatomb, and so far the ratio is about three hours futzing with the setup for each three minutes of music/video I want to play, to be repeated next time because the working setup inexplicably broke. I'd like to have an option to pipe an audio stream from a cental PC to various non-digital audio systems around the house. My first guess would be an FM transmitter plugged directly into the output jack of the sound card. Every FM transmitter I've tried, though, has been barely capable of transmitting to a receiver 18" away, let alone through the steel siding to the detatched garage. I could build a full-fledged MythTV box to go beside the DirecTV box - who knows, it might even replace it - but that may be overkill, and doesn't cover listening in the garage. So what do you think I should do? I could shop around for old laptops, and put one at each listening point - I can handle setting up streaming from there. I could grab two or three $150 netbooks, and use them - they'd probably burn less electricity. I could go exotic, get some microatx or PC104 hardware and build from there. What's the best solution?
