Another giveaway - no stories or noble causes required this time; just be the first one to say "Yeah, I'll take that!" and it's yours. Up for grabs: Two 512mb sticks (1gb total) of laptop RAM. Used but fully functional, and pulled from my Vaio VGN-A690 as part of an upgrade. (Helloooo, 2GB of RAM me!) This is Sony's originally installed RAM, so I don't know the manufacturer. Specs from Sony are: 533mhz DDRII SDRAM, PC2-4200. One stick or both, it's up to you. Smartphone w/ Linux?

Does anyone have a smartphone/PDA that works well with Linux? The only ones that I really know of are the Treo's, and Palm OS is getting a little long in the tooth. If you have a success story or recommendation of a phone let me know! -- Kyle Sexton

Indexing home videos

Does anyone know of an existing system for indexing home videos? I could throw together a small db and set up some frontend for searching and entering videos but if there is something out there it would save me time. I plan on converting the raw dv to dvd, burning a copy and also keeping a copy on disk. A way of naming and then searching them for content would be really nice. Thanks, Brad

I found out that SyncML would probably work on my phone, but Sprint seems to be blocking it. Try https://zyb.com/ for online sync. It can be if you add a headset and cell CF card (or 802.11 for a wifi phone) :) Heh, I think I may have found a solution. Looks like with SyncML and services like www.scheduleworld.com <http://www.scheduleworld.com/> you can pretty much sync any phone OTA. In addition there are Evolution plug-ins for SyncML. :) -- Kyle Sexton

Hey look, Debian 4.0 is out...

http://www.debian.org/News/2007/20070408 I'm sure the Debian fans around here noticed, but for those not watching for it it's now official. It's a tad late from the projected Apr. 2 release. At least at this rate their release schedule should inspire fewer jokes... I have run Testing as recently as 2 weeks ago, and what I saw was pretty nice. I may wipe the Ubuntu 7.04 beta on my P4 and give this final Debian 4.0 release a go again. Jon.

Free Online Taxes

There's some IRS program called Freefile. If you make less than $52k a year, you can choose any of these companies ( http://www.irs.gov/app/freeFile/jsp/index.jsp) and do your federal return for free online. I used HR block online the last two years, so I was going to again, and I got THIS: We've detected that you're using an operating system that is currently not supported by TaxCut Standard Software. TaxCut Standard Software has been optimized for the following operating systems. Win2000, WINXP, Win Vista, MAC OS 10.2.8, MAC OS 10.3.9 and MAC OS 10.4.8 WTF, Why do they care what OS I run? It's a damn web application. All they need to do is optimize for the only real browser platform, Mozilla, and It'll work anywhere someone has a web browser. Their inflammatory remarks have angered me, and I want to choose some other company now. Any suggestions?

As I said in IRC, DamnSmall, Puppy, straight Debian, a trimmed Ubuntu, Xubuntu or Fluxbuntu. The last two are Ubuntu that has already been trimmed for use on older systems. Fluxbuntu is not an official Canonical project, but it looks pretty good. It is like DamnSmall with some extra graphical smoothness. You probably don't have enough RAM to run Xubuntu. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xubuntu Looks like fluxbuntu.org is currently offline for a redesign, but I could copy the .iso for you from my machine. http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=fluxbuntu http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fluxbuntu Also lightweight is nUbuntu http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NUbuntu for network penetration testing. Also uses Fluxbox.
