What is involved in an "Open Standard" truly being so?

Open Standard. 2 words that are being abused or distorted.. Either singly or as a "self qualifying " term. Open means what it says and says what it means. As should Standard. So any tangible work or expressible code should either pass or fail examination for those terms BOTH applying. Either a Standard is Open and meets every criteria for that term applying or it is misused. Either something is in compliance with a Standard that passes the first test for being Open or it is neither. Thus a majority of what we have been misled are Open Standards are not. Upgraded to Ubuntu 7.10, now resolution stuck at 1600x1200

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 7.10. Now the screen resolution is stuck at 1600x1200. My monitor is straining to do this resolution and the screen is all bendy. I can't adjust the monitor itself to work with the new resolution as this monitor is shared between three other computers and would need to be readjusted back to the prior settings every time I pressed the KVM switch. I have been to System > Preferences > Screen Resolution. I pull down the menu and select the resolution which has always worked well, which is 1024x768. I press Apply. The screen resolution *does not change*, but I get a dialog box saying "do you want to keep this resolution or revert to the old resolution?" Selecting "keep this resolution" does not change the resolution to 1024x768. I've tried Ctrl-Alt-Shift + to change screen resolutions. For some reason 1024x768 is not an option in the list. I'm presuming that editing a config file is in order. I have no problem doing this and understand the need to back things up. However, I have only done XFree86 config files and don't know what to do with xorg. Incidentally, 1600x1200 has always been the resolution used by the graphical login screen. I've wanted to change the initial resolution to 1024x768 as well, but I don't know how to do that either. Frankly I just hate graphical login screens, but I can't do without my GUI for normal computer use. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! I take the jab from LukeJr, and remind him of a previous conversation off line however the actual reason is "Why not?," When I figure out how do do it with fedora, I am going to scratch it and repeat for ubuntu, suze, BSD, and whatever else comes across my hands. I know they are all pretty much the same in theory, but I have been told Fedora is the worst way to go for a beginner, er that is outside of slackware and the whole compile the kernel as you go; but when I get to that level and have a question, I'll ask...... But thanks to those who gave a "educational" response

Remote Application questions- may determine which Distro I use.

Simple concept: I have been running ramdisk Linux distros whan at home to compatibility check them. And waiting to make a selection based on which distro will best handle solving the below scenario. Is it practical to use a slow wireless notebook thru remote sessions at reasonable speed? The "Host" and notebook for those remote sessions is defined below as "Pertinent Details" Above all else- Web browsing that's not painful. Primary Need there. Dead last but would be nice: Remote word processing NOT Google docs but local with forms printing. As in to access/update a campground reservation program and docs for the same property. Pertinent details: I am now the owner of a CF-25 Toughbook armored notebook. P166,32 mb ram, 2gig hd. Not a screamer. But folks have had X and wireless working on these. 80% of my "at home" weekend is spent within local wifi of my home. Home link to "outside world" is DSL at 1.34down/793 up. That 793 being averaged but for the phase 2 of this concept posibily an issue. Home hardware is: a dual core 2.88ghz class machine that I can get 2gig of ram in. 200gig ATA drive currently XP only but getting a Linux distro pending this current issue's results.
