High await numbers

I'm getting very suspicious numbers for the average wait time on my swap partition (hda3). The iostat -x output doesn't look very good wrapped for email, but I'm seeing await over 3000 ms, and svctm over 2000. What's really surprising about this is that the system is using the swap partition, but doesn't seem to be actively swapping - vmstat shows 0 si/so most of the time. Smart monitoring daemon isn't reporting any problems with the drive, and fsck doesn't show any errors. I did read somewhere that Redhat's iostat sometimes produces anamolous readings, but the other readings on the drive look reasonable. Anybody have ideas on how I can pursue this issue further?

(OT) Solaris

What's it take to learn Solaris administration if you're well grounded in Linux? I know some of you run Sun hardware, but you tend to install Linux on it, don't you?

As an update, I've swapped out the PII-300Mhz machine for an 850Mhz Duron so I can try out a solution which involves creating a WAV stream but then directly encoding the WAV stream to a MP3 file. Its an Ecasound project, I found it here: http://www.linuxgazette.com/issue94/yan-fa.html I am altering the original project by using a single station radio and recording from Line-In (I only have recording needs on NPR). Otherwise it will be the same thing. The guy who wrote the thing said that he wouldn't want to try it with less than a PII-450Mhz machine. And I always thought: the very simplest words Must be enough. When I say what things are like Everyone's heart must be torn to shreds. There was a source I found (then lost...) which stated that dropped samples in recorded WAV files could be the result of lower priority in the multitasking system. Run recordings as root and you have a better quality recording, especially on a much older machine. Especially if you are running a testing/unstable debian like Mepis. The solution I've come up with is to save the old config file, let apt-get update the config file and then extract the lines I want fom the old config and merge into the new config. I do this only when the new config has features that need to be included to makke the updated package work. Making a merge config function would be an extremely difficult task to perform. The best solution I can think of would be an option to merge files based on user input. Like you could do a diff and then say "merge lines x-y from old conf into new conf" or "replace lines u-v from new with lines w-z from old". Which would still be a bit of a pain. If I know you are bringing a laptop w/ this problem to the LUG meeting, I can bring an extra 3com card that I know will be supported. The 3c574 has never failed to be supported by any distro with a ftp or network installer. BSD however, caused minor problems for dj_goku at the last meeting. We had to use my laptop to get the right driver onto a floppy for his old beast. You may want to look into flac. I believe it is under the ogg vorbis umbrella of audio formats. Let us know how this project progresses. Take care. I'm a little wary of using a streaming options when I can get it through a plain old radio locally.
