recycling a ATX mobo into a server...

Thinking of recycling a socketA ATX mobo into a 1U server. Any thoughts on this? Is it possible? Will it end up costing more than just buying a 1U server? What hardware would it take and cost to do this and have three HD in it. === Drives 1. boot and the OS 2,3 Linux Software mirrored - hot swap thanks

Depends if you already have the drives and other hardware. A 1U or 2U case can cost from $250-500. In a 1U, you may need to get low-profile RAM or CPU heatsink/fan to gain enough space to fit everything in the case. Those are really the only specialty parts in a 1U. You may want to add more case fans, depending on what comes with your case and the open fan slots available. As you add more drives, you need more air flow. That said, hear this. I would not necessarily run most business critical functions off something like this. For personal use it's cool, but you don't want to have heat-related lockups in a business because you went cheap. There is such a thing as server-class motherboards. They are built a bit tougher and with better components, but they cost about 2-3x your average motherboard. DVD Shrink http://www.dvdshrink.org/what.html for Linux would be great. It is freeware, http://www.dvdshrink.org/license.html, so you might get a look at the code if you asked nice. If all else fails you could see what the program does and replicate. Basically it scans/rips the files on a DVD, unlocks the menus, allows you to compress and burn or reauthor a DVD. It interfaces with Nero for the burning of the copy. I don't know how hard all this would be, but it is definitely missing. I'd imagine that some of the functionality is out there as OSS for things such as the compression and you could interface with one of the burning apps like K3B that burn DVDs. Look into dvd::rip and DeCSS. Some of this may already work, but putting several pieces of console-based software together with a GUI may be what's needed. I have no idea how to do this on Linux and just started doing it on Windows. So is there a good tutorial somewhere on how to combine all the pieces you two have mentioned in order to come up with a working copy of a dvd movie? I have no problems using DVDShrink, it's dead easy, but takes about 1.5 hours on my AMD XP64 3000+. I'm still thinking that http://www.exit1.org/dvdrip/ DVD::Rip is the answer I was looking for if anything. By CardBus slot, do you mean PC Card slot in a laptop? Anyone know of a Internet Service Providers that can give you speeds of T1 or greater and flexible enough to go anywhere with as little lead time as possible? Wanting T1+ speed, at a mobile site somewhere in Kansas or Missouri, with a 24-48 hour install? Wireless, Satellite, etc... Also has to be IPSEC VPN friendly (No Direcway). Our company has been working on a Disaster Recovery Plan and we signed a contract with Agility. We pay them a monthly service fee and they guarantee that on the event of a disaster, they will send us out a double wide trailer to the destination of our choice along with workstations, servers, and printers for up to 40 people. Everything to get us working again with minimal downtime. The problem is their basic package does not give you a lot of bandwidth (512/384kbps shared with VOIP phones). You can't just upgrade the bandwidth, and the monthly change for the Enterprise version is just way too expensive and still only gives you the bandwidth of a single T1 shared with VOIP. Our problem is that we have many remote offices that VPN into our network to do their work. With the above solution, we don't have the bandwidth to keep the status quo. Looking for any feedback regarding DRP bandwidth solutions available. Thanks.
