PDF pseudo-printing (Debian CUPS)

I must be really dense. When I look at the Control Center - Printers in KDE, I see printers listed that include printing PDF to file, but when I try to print something out of, say, Firefox, they don't show up in the list of printers. When I connect to localhost:631 and try to add a printer, I don't see any option to add a printer as print-to-file. What am I missing?

Setting up CUPS is quite painless. Open up a browser ands go to localhost:631 when asked for a administrator use root. You could also create a special user id/psw just for cups (I've never done this and can't walk you through it). Then just fill in the blanks and choose from choices/dropdowns. If you have printers set up on more than one PC/location then things get more complicated. I have one PC running CUPs in advertising mode, as it has all the printers, and the other PCs point there to find printers for use. You have to tell the CUPs daemon to advertise and what networks can access. For this you'll need to whip out an editor and modify config files and tell CUPS to reread them. CUPS does have a lot of documentation that can be installed locally or read from the web. You'll need to edit the /etc/cups/cupsd.conf file and play with the BrowsePoll, BrowseAllow, BrowseDeny, BrowseProtocols, BrowseRelay, and Browsing directives. http://www.cups.org/sam.html#BrowseAllow For more information. I would also add RTFM, but the TFM is not obvious on where to Fing start, and the TFM documentation structure is Fing confusing enough to disorient even someone as knowledgeable as Bruce Perens. I read a rant he wrote once on this. The CUPs people are clueless when it comes to writing a clear document on use of CUPs. However once it is *properly* configured, maintenance is a breeze. There is also a nice CLI commandset (ie lpadmin), for those that prefer CLI over GUI. Basically the only book you really need to get familiar with is the SAM. Do tell! How? I've done a workaround by editing the local lpr string to hardcode in a cups printer name. That works for me. Until I update Moz or Firefox. I can attest to this. The only slower than the RPM GUI package manager is the gentoo GUI package manager. It's painfully slow, something that should only be used under heavy alcohol consumption. heavy enough that you don't know how long it's taking and don't care. Linux Backups: Tape Drives

Tell me a story about tape drives. I'm looking for any recommendations/horror stories about tape libraries and Linux. I've got a Sun StorEdge L9 that I've been thinking of putting on a Linux box. It's an HP Ultrium C71471A (er something) that's been rebranded as a Sun device. I've read it has different firmware than the HP version, but according to information at http://amanda.org some folk(s) are using it with Linux. Then I read that this thing is no longer made, let alone supported, therefore I don't want to depend on it ultimately, but in the short term, it likely outperforms nothing. Another thing that I'm not sure of yet, is the capacity of the tape library for this thing. On the high end, it may be 900GB, but based on what I've seen so far I think it's a measely 360GB which probably isn't going to cut it... for long. Anybody using high capacity backup system they're are really happy with? Thanks. -- Dave Hull http://insipid.com

high end laptops and linux

Any recommendations on a high end laptop that works well with Linux? I am thinking nvidia graphics and at least a gig of RAM 802.11b,g cdrw/dvdrw usb2 firewire now sure what else.. I haven't shopped for a laptop in ages!

Well, that's part of the problem. It's a dedicated server in a local hosting company (Arsalon). I only have access to the machine over SSH, and Redhat Enterprise Linux (I believe) is not a free download. I did insist that they take a complete back up of the system before we start, so that will exist.

Sparc keyboard and mouse
