I think it was a mistake on SuSE's part to ship 9.1 with an older version of
KDE than they had available in their contrib tree. That said, I've
successfully upgraded from 9.0 to 9.1 several times with a newer KDE on 9.0
than I had on 9.1. The first time I had a lot of dependency errors that I
dealt with and resolved by telling YaST not to bother 'upgrading' KDE from
the 9.0 version to the 9.1 version. The other time, i simply downgraded KDE
to the version that ships with 9.0 before doing the 9.1 upgrade. That was
pretty easy to do, but would have been even easier if SuSE used rpm 4.2 and
repackaged everything by default, so you really could just rollback your
rpms.

In the future, I think I'm just going to not bother with the contrib tree,
except maybe inside a user-mode linux install, and just upgrade KDE as the
distro itself (whatever distro it is that I'm using) does.
