Burbling up from the dull memory dump comes a reference to an IP phone that 
was fairly cheap - $10 - $20 - plug in, run install, call anywhere.  Someone 
came up with a Linux hack for it that meant you didn't have to pay the 
subscription charges to the folks who were doing the translation.

I'll try to dredge up the rest of the storey, but the fragement above may 
awaken the memory in someone else...
