Yep, on slow machines, or even worse, slow I/O machines (laptops) gentoo
is a boar. HENCE, compile farm already running...

HMM, ok, that may be true, BUT, there are some high quality solutions to
the issue that are easy to implement. Having a functional compile farm
takes a long time to construct. Which, is why I am happy to lend mine
to the cause. I can get a gentoo build done in a few hours, just by
using distcc, and enough computers.
Now, the catch is, is that on a laptop, there are TONS of other limiting
factors, not the least of which are the probably horrible hard drive
spinning away, low memmory, slow memory access... etc. etc. etc. The
list goes on. 30 hours is a REALLY long time, I would bet there is
something else wack. I would say you should try to get ide DMA working
using hdparm, it may save you a TON of time. Kris
