Sounds like you are not passing the correct 'root=/dev/hda1' in the
grub.conf (assuming you used grub)

HTH,

Subject: gentoo install

A couple of weeks ago I started a gentoo install. Everything seemed to
be
going fine untill the reboot after building the kernel and editing
/etc/fstab. I get the error msg "kernel panic: UFS : Unable to mount
root
fs on 03:03" I'm not sure if this means my kernel is jacked or if I
messed
up in /etc/fstab? I mentioned etc/fstab because it was one of the last
steps in the install.

I have an ext3 /boot partition and reiserfs for the / and /home
partitions and of course a normal /swap.

Brian
