Bzip compresses better than gzip, though you're only going to get about
10%-20% less file size with bzip than with gzip.
Frankly, I'd just archive onto a CD for files less than 700MB in size.
If they're less than a couple hundred megabytes, you'd fit three
uncompressed files on a CD, maybe four.
Of course, I buy 100CD spindles and have plenty of CDs to spare. And I
just can't bring myself to use CD-RWs. The concept of eraseable CDs is
just too scary. But hey, if you're only going to archive for a short
time, you might be able to use a CD-RW.
