Linux and X (especially Gnome and KDE) generally require a fully qualified
domain name that resolves to an IP. Generally, I've just been using a DHCP
server equiped with dynamic DNS on our network... but, when I take the laptop
with me away from the office and fire up Gnome, it complains because the name no
longer resolves because I'm not attached to the network anymore.

So, how do I either:
1. Switch to no host name (localhost.localdomain) when I'm away from the
network, or
2. Set my hosts file entry to 127.0.0.1 for my host name
... automatically.

I have been doing this manually but it requires waiting _forever_ for the
network to fail out and then a complete reboot and waiting _forever_ again. I
would like the OS to take care of this task simply.
