New End Users Guides

I'm looking for resources for an end-user who is 90% Mac (9), 10% Windows
now, and looking to escape the Gates trap as well as the Apple hardware trap
(yes, you can do that, but you need to replace your computer).

She objects to the hard-hat-and-toolbelt approach to an operating system -
she wants to sit down and work, not spend days delving into configuration
and troubleshooting. She's technical enough to get badly sidetracked by
that, and she resents the loss of time-on-task.

If anybody knows of good resources for this kind of user wanting to start
evaluating recent distributions such as RedHat, Mandrake (and probably
YellowDog), they would be helpful. Given some decent input, she's likely to
generate some good documentation herself (used to document stuff for UMKC's
computer lab, and some of her work is still industry standard).
