Exchange Server and Ximian Evolution

I'm trying to help a friend set up his Evolution account, with the ability to send outgoing mail 
via SMTP.  The server he must go through to do so, however, is an Exchange server (not sure exactly 
what version).  Has anyone been able to get this to work?  I know it supposedly doesn't work with 
Outlook Express, but it does with their "professional" e-mail clients, like outlook 2k and xp.  Or 
is there some sort of syntax (<SMTP:x at y.z>) format he can use to get it to work?
