POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY SPECIALIST (Information
Specialist)

The Division of Biological Sciences at the University
of Kansas is seeking a person to support microcomputer
use and assist with Web sites. Tentative starting date
is Sept. 30, 2002.

Working Title: Computer Technology Specialist
Official Title: Information Specialist
Position type: Full-time unclassified staff, regular
appointment subject to review and reappointment.
Salary: $38,000 to $40,000

Responsibilities:

1. Provide general support for microcomputer use,
including both Macintosh and PC (Windows) platforms
and associated software. Troubleshoot microcomputer
problems (hardware and software) for Division. 

2. Coordinate design and maintenance of Division,
Departmental, faculty and staff, and course-related
Web pages. Train and supervise staff and/or student
assistants in designing and maintaining Web sites.
Initiate and maintain methods to keep Web sites
updated.

3. Install and configure software on faculty, staff,
and lab microcomputers and assist with operation if
needed.

4. Assist faculty with incorporating computers into
their teaching, including use of the Web, "courseware"
(e.g., Blackboard), and computer-mediated classroom
techniques.

5. Supervise staff and/or student hourly employees
assisting with microcomputer support functions. 

6. Act as liaison with the computer center, Networking
& Telecommunications Services (NTS), KU Network
Administrators (KUNA), and related campus
organizations. Keep current on University policies and
guidelines related to computers, and support and
publicize those policies as needed within the
Division.

7. Advise and assist faculty and staff with purchase
of microcomputers or other hardware or software.

Required Qualifications:

1. Bachelor's degree and two years experience
supporting microcomputers (hardware and software)

2. Ability to support both Macintosh and PC (Windows)
operating systems and software

3. Ability to communicate and work effectively in an
academic setting with colleagues from a variety of
backgrounds on both technical and nontechnical levels

4. Ability to design and support Web sites

5. Ability to supervise staff or student hourly
assistants assisting with microcomputer support

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Experience designing and supporting Web sites

2. Ability to troubleshoot problems with
ethernet/network connections

3. Knowledge of TCP/IP protocol

4. Knowledge of University of Kansas computer policies
and procedures

5. Microsoft certification at any level
