Sniffing the serial port?

been wanting to do the same myself..i find open
source most attractive because of the fact that 
you can tell exactly how everything works..im not
that good at c..but given the knowlege of how 
some of the underlying hardware works and some
tricks/tinkering...i'd find the time to notch c
onto my belt :) anyone know of any good tutorial/
resources on serial/hardware programming?
