Hey everybody. I didn't mean to wait so long in reporting on last weeks
meeting, but I've been a little busy. This is not like an official KCLUG
meeting minutes, but a run-down for those not in attendance. I will try
to do this for each meeting I attend.

1. New Meeting Place: We now have a room reserved at the KC Public
Library, I am working on making it a permanent reservation, but currently
will have to call in advance to confirm. For the two people that were at
the South Pole last week and didn't get my frantic emails regarding the
meeting place, the address follows:

KC Public Library
Missouri Valley Room - 3rd Floor
311 E. 12th St.
KC, MO 64106
816-701-3400
6:00-8:45 Officially starts at 6:30

We will have to work on getting the changes into the webpage under
development and the posting at Computer User. Until then, Rich, could you
please post the sign again outside your bldg.? Anyone inviting friends to
the future meetings please note the change. We can still bring computers
to the meetings to work on, but must bring our own monitors, cables and
such. We have no network or phone connection, but we can bring in hubs and
cables for quick setup. This is a very large room and would easily hold
50+ people. If anyone has a better place in mind, please check into it and
report back to the list.

2. KCLUG Website: (Really the 1st order of business) Hal Dusten has
compiled together ideas from several of you for the look of the site as
well as a mail archive. We decided to go with his compilation of efforts
as an immediate solution for replacing the current site. He only needs to
get password info from Rich Minear or Mike Nuliep for upload. I think it
was Pat Miller who offered to take a shot of the KC skyline for the site
header (he was there and owns a digital camera). The point of an original
photo is to avoid any copyright issues. We should leave an open thread on
the mail list for web development. The motivation behind replacing the
site is to update and expand content, Rich now has no time for site dev.
and general redesign for greater public access.

3. Linux Demo Day / MS Windows 2000 Release Day - A few people brought up
the empending release date for Windows 2000. Several major Linux sites
have encouraged local LUGs to have a presence outside the MS venue to
distribute anti-FUD or general Linux info, whatever.

Windows 2000 Release Celebration/Launch
Feb. 17th, 2000
Bartle Hall
6-8pm

More info on Linux Demo Day can be found at www.linuxdemo.org and in this
article: http://www.zdnet.com/sr/stories/news/0,4538,2423091,00.html . It
was decided that it would be too expensive to hand out Linux CDs and too
late to ask RedHat or one of the other Distros for CDs, see Linux Demo Day
page (list closed 1/31). What we can do however is show up and talk to
people. We decided at the meeting to make-up some business cards with
KCLUG contact info on them. I will purchase business card stock and print
some up. I created a kclug at yahoo.com email address to receive inquiries,
we would like to have a membership at kclug.org redirect to this address.
This will save the list from spam.
It was also suggested that we combine efforts with the KULUA group. Mac
said he would contact the group and find out what they are preparing on
this front. If someone could work on creating a sign with KCLUG or Linux
Info on it that would be great. Please post your intentions to the list
and work together. Does anyone know of the legality of handing out info on
the sidewalk downtown?

4. Linuxfest: www.linuxfest.net June 20-24 at the OP Trade Ctr. Is it
for real? Several people have been checking into their claims of speakers
and attending companies and trying to get some kind of confirmation. One
example is that Eric Raymond is to be a keynote speaker, yet their is no
mention on his site about this event. On the Redhat.com site there is no
mention of their involvement on the events page, nor is there on the
Atipa.com site. Ed said he would check into Atipa since they are supposed
to have new digs in KC. Everyone please dig to find out more info. I just
checked all the companies they list and found nothing.

5. Alternative meeting night: It was brought up again about having
another meeting night to accommodate those that can't make a Wed. night.
I have reserved the room at the library for Tues. 2/15 6-8:45pm.
Ed Allen has confirmed that he will be there to help and answer questions.
Some of us won't make the meeting on Tues., but hope anyone who has felt
left out will try to attend. We are not intending to create a KCLUG II,
but a chance for people to get some Linux help and meet. We'll see how the
turn out is and may do this next month as well.

6. Tip of the Month: Ed gave us a new way to use psaux.
Type: 'psaux -f' at cmd line to view related processes as a tree. Next tip
was for the setleds command. Type: 'man setleds' or 'setleds -D +num' to
set the numlock on as a default. Thanks Ed.

Sorry this got so long. If anyone has a topic they wish to discuss at the
alternative meeting night or the next regular meeting please post to the
list.
