I had suggested something similar on kclug chat a while back.  specifically, 
software that could be used in conjunction with each other with three 
laptops using signal strenght for triangulation.  It would require three 
mobile units in line with each other or parallel with each other running and 
using some type of free map, Google maps perhaps?  i think it is possible to 
nail wireless transmitters down to the room in a house this way.  High rise 
apartments could be done the same way by two on one floor, and a third under 
provided the halls ran the same way.  the same could be done for locating 
wireless laptops in any public building.
