unmounting a volume

What kernel are you running?  Is it a 2.6?  I still use 2.4 series and have not ever had a USB hang like you describe.  Since hotplug started taking care of USB I've not had a problem.  Also, what distro are you running?  This may make a difference because of what packages are included as part of your GUI environment and what default services are running.

As for not being able to kill a process, is it possible that you were trying to kill a parent process while a child process was still busy/locked?  Similar to trying to delete a directory that still has subdirectories that are not empty.
