Ok, so you know that to make this the default you edit /etc/inittab, and find 
where it says 

id:5:initdefault:

and change it to 

id:3:initdefault:

right?  (Should come right before the definitions of the runlevels.)

It sounded almost like a hardware error to me, something thermal, but it could 
be software.
