Lirc on gentoo

[Ben Coffman]

I have made a receiver that I know works, but for some reason when I try to
run mode2 on my gentoo Linux system I get this error.

          mode2: error opening /dev/lirc
          mode2: No such file or directory

Any suggestions on where I should go on fixing this?
