Not sure if this is sort of what you are looking for.
This is based, I believe, on Zephyr's OSS accounting package.

There is a more complex version offered by these people
(which is the descendent of Zephyr's package),
but you said you wanted something simple.

There used to be several OSS accounting packages, but
I haven't really been keeping track of them. Wouldn't 
surprise me if the good ones have gone commercial.
