Cool, another California native!  I moved here about 3 months ago from
the Bay Area.  One study said that to 'get by', you had to make $62k. 
Of course you could survive on less, substitute broadband for
warwalking, sell your car and use public transportation, etc.  But not
all areas of California are urban metropolises(?).

And you have tons of unemployed in the tech sector, watering their lips
at a $36k job since it is income.
